What are peoples thoughts on the Penn 340 reel

What are peoples thoughts on the Penn 340 or 345

I have just recently gone away from the old reef master winch and started using rod and real. Brought a combo for Bottom bouncing 15-25 kg I think with braid. To date picked up a Ray and 8kg Dhui great fun but I recon I am missing several while just getting the hang of the rod and reel set up. Happy with the reel but what are people’s thoughts. For $299.00 are there better reels out there in that price range for bottom bouncing.

Should be pretty easy to

Should be pretty easy to tell if its braid or not I would have thought? At that price i'd be looking at the saltists, but why would you be looking to change if you've just brought a reel?

hlokk is my son is now thinking of changing to a rod as well. Yes its braid your right should be easy to tell. I am away at work at the moment, I was refuring to the rod size. Its a bit hard to check from here.

Anyway cheers for your comments.

There is not much wrong with the Penn reels IMO

Don't worry, you will soon get the hang of it. It can sometimes take a little adjustment to a different type of outfit.

Ah, I get what you mean now. The saltists are definately worth checking out and fit the budget perfectly (though you need to add braid and a rod to that). Braid will definately give an advantage with feeling bites in the deeper water. Consider the rod actions though, as a very stiff rod can be hard to keep connected with the fish when the braid has no stretch especially if you're new to it. A graphite rod will also assist in improving the feel. There are several options around for under the $150 mark (but theres always the option to spend more :D). Best bet is to head down to a local tackle store and try a few out. Some shops will also let you put some bends in the rod so you can get an idea of the feel of the rods (there can be a lot of variance in actions and stiffness). Ryan or Honsu at Oceanside in O'connor should be able to help you would with exactly what you want.

You should be able to feel more bites with the new setup, but more importantly IMO, you'll have more fun fighting the fish Laughing
