What hooks do you use ?

Just wondering what hooks others use. I have always used gamakatsu 9,0 octopus style hooks for fishing in bunbury and coral bay. This year in coral bay chasing reds we dropped a heap of fish. This was not normal and may have been just bad luck or running higher drag settings than normal to try and beat the sharks.

I know a lot of people use circle hooks.Give me some opinions on what works best please.

Thanks in advance

 Offset stainless circles and

Offset stainless circles and 200lb leader cut our loss rate by half easy for bottom bouncing. Also 7/0 tarpons for gangs and big tarpons for livies or floaters.

Yeah I should have made myself more clear for the uneducated, 200lb for the rig leader and 80lb for the shock to the braid.

Fucken hell boys are you all on the same menstrual cycle or something? I was laughing at the fact that I am probably going into it a little undergunned.

Gamakatsu circles or occy

Fri, 2016-07-01 20:11

Gamakatsu circles or occy 6/0-8/0 snelled , 100lb jinki green for the rig when fishing offshore.

When using the circle hooks I still strike, just not as aggressively, I actually try to just be a bit lazy.

 Gamakatsu big bait circles

Fri, 2016-07-01 23:11

Gamakatsu big bait circles in 7/0 or 8/0 on top with a tanaiwa 18 on the bottom, no strike just feed it back to the fish then slowly lift when you reckon it's loaded.

Owner mutu 5/0 circles are what work for me, don't strike but wait till you feel a little weight and then slowly pull back. Corner of the gob every time

Circle south J hook north

Fri, 2016-07-01 23:59

Fishing for Dhuies down South, after many years, I'm now a big circle hook convert. But still not convinced when fishing North. Personally, I think the bigger mouthed Dhuie's (and up North Rankin cods) go well with the bigger circle hooks where they can have plenty of line, swallow the bait and let the circle lip hook them. Also nice when you are catching and releasing smaller Dhuies. But up North, I struggle to catch a red (and Spanglies) on anything other than a J hook and find I need to strike hard to penetrate their smaller harder mouths.
Can't say I'm 100% convinced with my theories, but I have had days of missing and dropping plenty on the circles (up Exmouth) and then swapping to J hooks and going ok. For best results, you need to fish differently with different hooks depending on your target species.

Live bait hooks

Sat, 2016-07-02 06:13

Always use either 8/0 or 9/0 Greenwave live bait hooks or 6/0 or 8/0 tarpons for whatever comes along. Hardly ever gang the tarpons as found out its a waste of bait and time.

Ehen fishing down south for dhufish would go as big as 10/0 or 12/0 tarpons on top hook with 6/0 on bottom for pickers

Never used stainless because if you lose a fish it keeps the hook for life unlike steel hooks that corrode away in time

Gamakatsu hooks

Sat, 2016-07-02 11:59

Fyi (in case you were not aware) there are heavier gauge gamakatsu hooks available than those shown in your pic.  Google Gamakatsu Big Bait Circle hooks.  These hooks are a heavier gauge and have a straight shank, not the turned down eye the Gamakatsu Circle hooks have.

6/0 Mustad Big Gun, for snapper I use Mustad 4/0 Big Red.

Up north, Gamakatsu stainless fly hooks, these were shown to me by a mate of mine who lives in Broome, they are strong as.

Same. Use sl12's for nearly everything. Go in well and are pretty strong for the gauge.

Fly hooks

Sat, 2016-07-02 20:58

I've been using 10/0 gamagatsu salt water fly hooks hooks for years for everything from sail fish to live baiting for Barra awesome Hooke and only ever had one type of hook in my box for a long time been using them for dhuys with good Sucsess since moving down here however I only use circles now for Bill fish since trying them about 5 years ago .
