What Motor

I find myself in the unfortunate position of having to buy a new boat :-) mostly approved by the minister or WAR and well more bloody WAR.
Now the new boat will be around the 6.8mtr range and it comes with a 150Hp.
Now is that a 150HP, etec, yammi, suzuki, this will lead the 2 stoke cheap version or 4 stroke . me fan of 4 stroke
like i said new boat have options

The only reason to consider an old tech cheap two stroke these days is if you are absolutely at the limit of your budget and it's the only way to get on the water. New four strokes are light, clean, quiet and fuel efficient.
I don't know much about E-tecs. Any of the four stroke brands should be good, although I think Yamaha and Suzuki are leading the way at the moment.

I've just been through the process of buying a new motor. I looked at; yamaha, suzuki, honda and etec. The suzuki came in at the cheapest (just) but with the reputation the motor has, the choice was a no brainer for me.

Suzuki 4 stroke
My old man just put a new 140hp Suzuki 4 stroke on the boat and its unbelievably fuel efficient and quiet.
Have accientally left the motor in idle while drifting a few times not realising its still on thats how quiet it is!

6.8m boat - I'm assuming a
6.8m boat - I'm assuming a plate boat? would have thought 175hp minimum. From what I saw recently Suzuki's are best value for money if going for a 4 stroke

Agree min 175 - I run a 225 on a 6.8
A 150 will be struggling and that will impact heavily on economy - go larger if possible financially

Looked at 4S and Etec
Picked the ETEC for a few reasons. Simpler engine (less to go wrong), Hole shot, Servicing (lived in Karratha then and a service was/is a ripoff). Economy similar (and heaps better than the old 2S). Down side still need oil, but in reservoir. Slightly noticable oil smell.
I simply think nowadays a Modern engine is the answer rather than ETEC or 4S. For 4S I would suggest Yamaha, but for some reason very few mention Tohatsu. I often wonder why so many commercial operator use these. Must be some reason?

Learned all about E-tecs the hard way
Last year my 28ft Fury had twin 175 E-tecs with ~495hrs & 5 years of age (with multiple injector failures requiring replacement).
I was in Esperance without the boat when a boat mechanic down there mentioned it would be worthwhile selling them before they reached 500hrs - he was of the view that a significant portion don't last that long without a major failure. Whilst I wasnt happy with the motors I was hardly willing to cough up for new ones.
A week later one of them blew up at 497 hours- sucked a reed valve into a cylinder and seized - expensive exercise to fix with no guarantee of future longevity.
Bit the bullet with 2 x new V6 Yamaha 225s and very happy with their performance (not the cost!) - fingers crossed they last the test of time - 150hours in all is good.
After speaking with every mechanic I could and undertaking many hours of research I had a final choice between the Yamaha and Suzuki. Interestingly all mechanics were not surpised about the etecs although I could not find a bad word said about Etecs online so I thought I would speak up...

A family friend's etec has
A family friend's etec has had numerous problems (injectors and the gearbox) since they purchased it new. Seems to be fine now (touch wood), but it's ruiend a few fishing trips. It's the same story though; I know some blokes who rant and rave about how good they are and some others who would refuse to go out on a boat with an etec on the back.

Got an e-tec, never had problems so can't fault it, mate has twin suzi's and would go the suzi's for sure due to fuel economy over 2 stroke.
