Whiting Weekend

For some reason (moon, tides, sun, swell, sea, etc, etc) most fish seemed “shut down” this weekend.  Fished the MAAC comp and it was hard work getting fish for the weigh in – was the same for everyone though.

The only species that seemed to be on the bite were the whiting.  We were lucky enough to get a couple of cracker King George early, 500m off the coast, with the biggest going 560mm and 1.05kg.  An afternoon “try” for the sand whiting increased our bag but everything was hard work – lots of fish on the sounder but no bite – even the sambos didn’t take the live bait on proven ground.

YPM managed 4 species which gave him the 6th juniors win in a row and the “expert repairer” won visitors, KG, and fish of the day so it wasn’t all bad.  A lot of hours for little return though.

We did find the depth of the sand whiting so I took out the better half and the young daughter for a quick trip to hunt them today.  The purpose was to stock up pinkie bait for after the ban and get a few fillets for Nana.  At least this worked and the whiting catch with 2 rods, and licences, was about 30 per hour.  With lots of quality bait carefully stored away, bring on December 16.

Yep as you said the fish did shut down. My never fail bream spot produces not even a bite, and my other never fail bream spot didn't produce a bite. Then we finally went to the canning it was hard to catch blowies!

Good report + pictures, thank you.

How do you rate sandwhitign as bait for snapper, compared to say mulies or squid?

Pinkie Bait

Mon, 2014-11-10 10:22

Whilst you can't fault mulies and squid, my favorite pinkie baits without question are whole sand whiting and bonito slabs.  I find that when the pinkies are around your sand whiting are lucky to get anywhere near the bottom.  One thing I have noticed though is that the pinkies tend to hit the middle of the whiting, unless they inhale it which they sometimes do, and will miss the snelled hooks.  Am thinking of devising a new snell arrangement for rigging the sandys when the ban ends.  Well preserved and presented baits are certainly a key factor though.
