Who uses artificial baits for bottom bashing?

Just wondering who uses artificial baits for bottom bashing for instance Berkley power grubs or the rubber squids. Or do you prefer to just use bait on its own? Just that I have noticed a few pics lately where people have used them! Do they realy make that much difference to your catch rate.

Squids

Mon, 2007-06-04 21:26

I have only used the squids before so far in conjunction with bait. But have found after a hit from say a decent sized black arse they dont stand up well to the teeth.

Hey James you may remember from my trip with you that I usually use either the lumo squids either on both hooks or at least on one and also the lumo beads if the squiddies are getting chewed have started using the grubs but have not hooked up as yet but then I have only used the grubs once so far

Mon, 2007-06-04 21:38

Yeah I use lumo beads on all my lighter rigs and the lumo tube on the heavier BB rigs.
I did buy some power grubs today 8" and am interested my self to see how well they go. What hooks Andrew are you using with the grubs?

squid

Mon, 2007-06-04 21:46

2 years ago i used the squid on a pro boat and they worked a treat (we were catching dhu fish, 1 after another and they went off the bite, as a joke i put 2 hooked with 2 squid on it and they where nailed asap 4 seconds of being on the bottom, i also tried them in 230m of water and they also worked ok. We got a flathead that went 4.2kg first drift when we were after red snapper )

i think they are good in the right environment

Power Grubs are good

Mon, 2007-06-04 23:12

I have used both power grubs and big squidggys at times. You need a bit of drift to make them work with the tail spiralling and enticing the strikes.

[img_assist|fid=55650|thumb=1|alt=New & Used|caption=No prizes for guessing which one has had an outing on the good ship Mackattack. Would love to know what would punch holes like that in a tail, my guess would be a big Harlequin. Shame it didn't hook up.]

Usually I prefer one B2 Lumo on the top hook and the supersnell on the bottom. The snell has its own bit of lumo tube holding it together which doubles as an attractant.

I rate the pink SB Labs as high quality too.

Recently been experimenting with other shads and also Berkley gulp worms, but so far no real success.

Cheers

Im intending on using the squid purely for its glow, once th elegs are gone atleast the head remains a bit longer.

Considering this though do people think it would be more economical to just use the glowing tube instead?

I reckon those squid are only going to be good for glow unless you get something on the first drift. Most of the time I've only seen the head come up after the first drift, pickers love the legs

Always use a rubber glow

Tue, 2007-06-05 12:49

Always use a rubber glow lumo on the top hook on a rig with 3 hooks, though, to only thing that i have had go for them are sambos, but I think it attracts fish.

Mate I just put in lumo squid and they came up in the fishing section.
I think you just have to keep a eye out as they only had the 1 lot of squid for bidding. There are others on there but more expensive. James

yep they work

If you are looking for rubber squid......go the B2's in glow pink or green.

Havent had any luck at all with the "new" Berley squids.....

Over the last 3 weekends we have caught 11 dhuies (3 kept)on 5" Snapbacks in water 10-20m deep.

only used mulies now as berley.....

I would go so far as saying that plastics will out fish bait in shallow water.....

Flashy lights

Tue, 2007-06-05 19:06

I have had some good success with the little flashy ligh thingo's , but it makes a rig worth about $12 all up with the sinker , swivel, hooks etc etc , but when you pull a couple of good fish on the rig when no one else is catching , well it makes it worth the trouble to rig them up.

I only put them on if we don't get fish in the first hour or so .

I pick mine up when I go past Oceanside , get to have a chat with Ryan at the same time ;) also the SWL squiddies seem to be for the flashy thingo's as they have a large hollow centre ( well the one's I buy do ) and don't seem to glow much but relying on the strobe to attract fish to them than their actual glow ability.

Sometimes I put a placcy worm on my hook with a lump of squid , when the squid goes the worm still wiggles away and I have caught some good black butt on the bait that has the red worm on it.

I have had the poddy fish on the hooks as well but havn't had any success with them yet , I recon I will have more luck in the shallower water when I go in my own tub fishing.

Well at least this placcy invasion has got us experimenting with lots more than was available 10 years ago.

can i just ask a question, im making up some rigs for saturday

Now im going to use some lumo squid, on the rig ive got a single hook down the bottom with a lumo squid on it, will bait that up as well

Up top ive got a snell set with one of those lumo tubes between the two hooks

Do these lumo things scare fish at all or are they just going to be attracted to a random glow with a big old squid attached :P

Depends if your fishing for the north boys or the southerners if its for the south side yes they do scare the fish and so does natural bait so just send down a plain hook with a good rub of deisel on it CHEERS SHAG

Squids

Thu, 2007-06-07 20:17

When I have artificial squids on my rig I like to have a snelled hook as I feel that the squid covers a lot of the hook and may affect the hookup rate.

I used to use artificial baits lots when fishing in the metro area, but now think that they are just a costly accessory. Even thou the potential of catching fish when your bait has been picked off is relatively attractive, I'm not overly convinced on their success. I guess the best way to test them is to go with the lumo/flashing squid without any bait what so ever and see how they go with a range of different techniques, ie, jigging them, slow moving, twitch, etc.

Theres no doubting the success of soft plastics, snapbacks etc, weather the lumo's/grubs work, its a tough one, I've seen photographic evidence which proves they do, but haven't seen proof without a bait teaser attached. I just started to find that my rigs were costing me enough as it was without having flashy bits hanging off them waiting to get snagged on terra firma.

The lumo lights and tubing etc might help when fishing 200m plus

and have caught fish, if the tube makes any difference or not
I dont know? but might cause some curiosity? Leather Jackets

I have had experiences

Fri, 2007-06-08 08:39

I have had experiences before with finicky fish that would not touch a rig with rubber lumo's on it, but when I dropped the rig down again with only one lumo on the top hook and we started catching fish.
