why oh why

went down to the Rockingham fore shore today to have a look at the beach art display there it was a really beautiful day and good turn out for it.

I then had a look at the jetty near the yacht club as a few people were fishing of it just as I get to the end this bogan (he was wearing a check shirt, had a mullet hair do and a cask of wine on the jetty next to him on the jetty) pulls up a NW blowie. they are horrible things arnt they I said. #### yeah he says and then plunges a knife into its head, what the hell did you do that for I asked with my blood pressure rising. hook was too far down he says wont be able to get it out. I said you didn't even try and you could have just cut it off and let him go it will rust out, oh well its done now too bad, I clench my teeth and fists turn on my heel and walk off wishing I was 35 years younger. I am no greeny but what the hell he ruined my day, I hate NW blowies too but not as much to do that

Mon, 2013-05-13 06:05

Do the nw blowies puff up? Could puffed him up, stuffed a blob in his gob and used it to balloon a bait out......suppose he could just use the goon bag tho, if hes not feelin sleepy

It Wouldn't bother me

Mon, 2013-05-13 08:35

It wouldn't bother me as long as it was done quickly and not tortured for fun then left on the jetty to rot .

I'll probaly get hammered for saying this , but i kill nearly every blowie i catch. But i don't leave them lying around as rubbish or for some poor dog to eat. They go into my rubbish bag and get taken away . In saying that , I won't hang around and continue to fish if the blowies are relentless.

If that's wrong , fire away and tell me why .

My only problem/s with people

Mon, 2013-05-13 09:43

My only problem/s with people killing blowies is that most people just chuck them on the jetty to let them die slowly & they don't dispose of them when they leave. Your not doing that so I've got no problem with your practices & I release all the blowies I catch. I've got no problem with a NW blowie being dispatched quickly either, the less of them there are the better.

They need culling in my

Mon, 2013-05-13 09:56

They need culling in my opinion. There is no way so many blowies can be good for the rest of the system. They're no different to carp in the sense they eat everything in sight to the point they force other species out of the area.

Everyone should be able to go down to the river and use bait to catch a few fish for a feed. This is now impossible in most metro areas as the blowies swarm in.

I haven't been here for long, has it always been like this? If not, then I think this is going to become a much larger problem in the next couple of years.

I read this last night and thought for a minute, and realised I don't really care about killing a NW blowie. As others have said the manner in which it's done is of some importance, but other than that...meh

What has this forum become....

Well, its a place where people can express their views and opinions on fishing.  Doesn't all have to be pro kill kill kill and it all doesn't have to be hugging the trees, just chill Winstun, somewhere in the middle is a happy place.

Mon, 2013-05-13 18:51

we have all caught a blowie and punted it through the imaginary goal posts,

may not be the first one you catch, its always about the 4th or 5th that cop the wrath as by then I'm over them

but as for letting the goon drinker ruin your day by killing a NW blowie Petermac, ive gotta say you must have alot of shit days.

feral fish ?????

Mon, 2013-05-13 19:03

I hate blowies but are they really a feral species as some one has said like carp , I can remember back in 1970,71 and 72 the whole of the swan and coast was infested with them , I vaguely remember an article in the west Australian written by a marine biologist at the time saying that they were developing a deformed tail, I remember going for a dive on the south mole around the same time with my uncle when we jumped in all we could see was millions and millions of blowies heading out to sea and the next thing the swan river and coast way free of blowies for decades I know people wont believe me but it is a true story

Using the nw for bait, do you

Tue, 2013-05-14 16:37

Using the nw for bait, do you need to be careful in the way of touching food or you mouth while skinning?

not intentional o course ( not liking ya fingers clean stuff) but an accidental smear or such? Could that kill you?

i always wash my hands and wipe them after dealing with the smaller common ones in the swan.

appologies for my ignorance in advance.

I have never had or heard of a problem, but Id suggest not smoking or eating with the stuff on your hands.

I think the toxin is in the liver or somewhere like that as the Japs eat them.

Wed, 2013-05-15 19:51

 Bait eh?

I usually move to another spot if I start getting them - I've caught the same one 3 times in 20 minutes before - but I see no use in kilkling them - but of course if they make good bait then that's another story.

I've found that they love prawns - I used to use prawns shells in my berley mix but took it out when I was catching too many NW blowies - it worked.  Now the only time I've got prawns on the boat is when I'm after some whiting
