Wilbinga Report 12/11/2011

Headed up to Wilbinga Saturday hoping to test out the recently acquired Pathfinder and maybe wet a line.

As others have reported it's pretty weedy up there at the moment. No chance of pulling anything in but seaweed.

Pathfinder went alright though :)

As long s it gets you in and out without you sitting in the passenger seat and having to share the fuel.

I was up there at the weekend, it was real weedy on Fri & Sat but cleared out Sunday after the high tide.

Caught a nice Salmon & heaps of BIG herring.

Had a great weekend.

Pathfinder Fuel Economy

Tue, 2011-11-15 09:44

Hey Mate, If you have free wheeling hubs on the front, that can drastically increase your fuel ecomony.

Father in-law has one and did that mod.  Made huge difference.

Enjoy your new wheels.

wilbinga saturday

Tue, 2011-11-15 11:41

I hope your pathfinder went better than we did....

I took a bunch of friends up there on saturday , ended up not fishing due to the massive ammounts of weed.

We just did some 4wd and then settled down to camp and have a few drinks for the night.

5 tyres needed re-inflating (bead let go and deflated tyres) and 1 changed ( off the rim entirely) due to the boys not getting their tyre pressure right.  3 were on a GQ and 3 on my mates 90 series Prado. (so no comments from either nissan or toyota owners haha)

Had to push a vitara we found stranded on the beach out too,  they were in deep and looked pretty stressed out.

My air jack got a hamering and ended up blowing the hose off which will require some repair.

But we still had a wicked time lol. Hopefully we'll actually get to do some good fishing in the coming months!!!

Wow

Sounds like a massive headache, what pressure were the boys' tyres running at?

Was the Vitara south of the main beach entrance on a pretty narrow stretch?

It's the first time i've been there and am looking forward to some fishing next time too!

Tue, 2011-11-15 12:52

The vitara was just north of the main bowl we enter thru when we come in from the wilbinga grove truck stop.

There is that really boggy section of beach there. the vitara was running 20psi and left the track at the top of the beach, thought it would be harder nearer the water LOL.

The boys started at 15psi then had to drop to around 8psi to get out from the same section the vitara was in. Me (prado) and my other mate (4runner) started at 10psi and stayed there, didnt have any problems.

I think the level of deflation for tyres varies between car/tyre?!?! My car with bridgestone 265/70 A/T's 10psi is perfect. but this may be too low for others...

I'm only learning too..... first 4wd.

It was an adventure anyway lol.

It's a matter of experience I think.

Tue, 2011-11-15 13:22

I only have 235/70 on my Disco. The majority of the time I am able to cope quite well at 18PSI but I do decrease to 12PSI when conditions are really tough. I choose a lower gear and just amble my way letting the torque do the work. Changing gears all the time will get you in trouble more often than not. The beaches up there can be unpredictable. Some areas near the water are safe while others can be like quick sand and if you go there it's fuggin trouble and stress time. The general rule of thumb I think is to travel in a group or if alone, don't take chances.

Redbucket, your report sounds like a weekend to forget LOL (apart from drinks etc). As for the Vitara, I recon 4 fit blokes could lift that thing out of anywhere. My rig weighs 2.5 ton LOL.

yeah we pushed the vitara out

Tue, 2011-11-15 20:00

yeah we pushed the vitara out no worries, once we dropped their tyres from the 20psi they were running they were out in no time.

All fun and games, anytime out and about fishing and 4wd is a good time.

Abandon, I'll keep an eye out for ya on the dunes and I'll say hello. Nice looking car mate!!!
