Windy night

Ended up going down to Hillarys and fishing behind Aqwa. BOM said it was gusting at 50 knotts there last night and I can believe them. It was howling and the spray was blowing about 50 metres over the rock wall. Managed to stick it out for about 3 hours and caught a couple of small skippy (including one I jagged in the butt). Had to toss them all back.
There was a bit of weed around as well, which made it a bit hard.
It all sounds pretty crappy, but it was great to get out and have a bit of wave action. The waters certainly had plenty of movement.

Anyone have any favourite landbased sites when the wind is howling?

Hi Rickets, I am definately planning to head further north. Want to head up and give Yanchep a crack very soon.
All the best
Colin Hay

Hi Colin

If you are North of the River maybe give Mindarie Marina a try next time it is howling. The reason I say that is that it has rock walls that face both North/Sounth and East/West so you can shelter a little on the leeward side no matter which way the wind is blowing. Plenty of Tailor around the point/entrance in the evenings and a few big Tarwhine on the Northern side. Heaps of whiting in the marina itself.

Cheers

I take my daughter for a fish inside Mindarie a fair bit. There are a heap of little whiting there at the moment and blue manna crabs.  Haven't tried the walls yet. I will give them a go next time I head that way. Thanks again for the tip

Somone recently suggested that there were tailor being caught on the beach near the northern wall at Hillarys. having the wind behind you certainly beats trying to belt a mulie into a 50 knott "sea breeze". Got to love the "breeze" part of that.
Noting the pic of a shark on your post reminds me that I saw a small shark while I was at the back of Aqwa last night. Don't know what it was, it was too choppy to se it clearly.
Thanks again Colin

When you say the northern tips of Ocean reef and Mindarie, do you mean the northern tip of the main wall or the northern walls?

Hi Sherbert I wish I did have. No just a crappy old commodore. Yanchep lagoon might be as good as I get without a 4wd.

Love to catch up with someone who has fished those waters. Don't know how you are situated for a midweek trip but I have some time owing to me and I was thinking of heading up that way for a day/nighter.

i went out with dad last

Sat, 2008-01-12 12:34

i went out with dad last night down at city beach groyne but it ses no fishing from 7pm through till 6am wich is weird but went up the coast trying different spots but it was too windy
stopped off at floreat drain and some people werew fishing but without luck checked out scarboro and trigg. at trigg the water was rite up to the boat ramp wich i havnt seen for along time and there was a photo shoot going on so we couldnt fish trigg. too packed at hillarys and we didnt take a light so its a deadly combination. was thinking about bennion beach and those various bays along the coast and the wind would probly be blocked out-----supposedly good for tailor
trying tonight dunno were though

Hopefully I will have better luck tonight. At least the wind looks a bit better.
