Winter Tailor
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2008-06-09 07:30
Well there seem to be a few around now.
Went out for 2 hours last night with scano.
Saw a lady catch one that would have gone 50cm if not 60!!! is was massive!
Had one myself but it spat the hooks after about 2 minutes of running.
Did see an older guy walking off the rocks with 4-6 good sized tailor as well.
I also think i lost my First big pinky on the rocks :( he was thumping hard and got me into the rocks

Hope so Col.
Should be Colin, i was at South BEach sunday watching the entire beach covered in bait schools getting hammered by Tailor, right on the beach. They were jumping clear of the water at times!! Even dogs running into the water chasing them wasnt dispersing them..

I'm planning to try popper
I'm planning to try popper fishing for tailor on some of the offshore reefs this winter...has anybody tried this and been successful? The reason I ask is because I saw a show or read a mag a while ago saying that it's better to use bait for this type of thing in the metro area, but would prefer to use lures....

I was asking about this
I was asking about this myself John. Certainly more fun watching your lure get smashed on the surface, plus with lures, you're the fish (baitfish that is). What you do or dont do determines whether it get hit or not. I must say I quite like lure fishing :D
Tried up at yanchep in the morning with a rising tide and a bit of chop, but no luck (and lost the popper :( )
Heres the info I got while talking to a lot of guys in tackle shops: Basically to target them with poppers, you want to do it in the morning on a rising tide. Can also do it in the arvo, and probably during the day boat based, but unweighted mulies work better as the fish are deeper in the arvo (tailor tend to come on the bite more in the arvo than the morning, especially with a bit of chop).
Some people have tailor reefs and will pick up quite a few sizeable tailor (e.g. 1kg+) in an arvo. Maybe not glamourous to those chasing dhuies only, but i quite like my pelagics. Bit of fun too instead of skull dragging up with 50lb+ :p

If your heading offshore look for good deep bubblewash inside many reef breaks.
It pays to be real early as the sun is coming up as usual. It is a common feeding time but schools of tailor turn up at unusual times, eg: in the day at the back of reefs feeding on outgoing tides.
Good fish feeding under a bubble wash are great on poppers but if your exploring try both poppers and a Twistie or Raider to get down deeper.
If you know of a good reef ledge where bigger Tailor haunt it well worth bait casting a big bait against the overhang shelf and letting it sink.
Tailor especially bigger ones seem to hang deep under big overhangs waiting to ambush any unsuspecting prey.
Big Metro fish will be commonly solo inshore though there is always exceptions as with any fishing where rules are broken.

Had a few today, we anchored and burleyed and drifted down coral prawns and pieces of squid on a bommie in 8m of water, caught a few plus some bustoffs on 6lb.

My best pb metro tailor was
My best pb metro tailor was caught right in the middle of the day in calm conditions usingf poppers as well. Just got to know where to look and IMO u can get them anywhere at anytime. Different parts of the day with light , tides, abd phases make all the diff. Knowing the right rig is also very important in my opinion, bait casting mulies works well but not all the time. Poppers and metals are sweet as well but only in the right conditions.
Match every thing up for your chosen location think what will work the best and you might find good size fish can be caught out of the recommended times of the day. There might not be as many but there size might make up for it.
Ive seen tailor caught in some stupid spots as well were i thought nothing but blowies would hang out in such water. But if you guys want some tailor action get up to kalbarri or steep point...........now pb's of 7kg are what you will be talking about.
30lb line 60lb leader and GT sized poppers, now thats fun.
Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

I haven't seen any for awhile at Hillarys tommo
Your best chance would be to fish the southern corner if an onshore wind is blowing. Metals and pilchards should work if they are there.

They have been a bit hard to find lately
Maybe around City Beach or Floreat Drain might be the go if their is some chop on the water,
