Worst fish ever tasted

Im sure this might have been covered in the past.

I dont like oily fish other than in a tin, and once was offered what turned out to be a Gem fish. And I almost spewed. Never again for me, even though some would rate them.

Had a taste comparison test

Mon, 2014-11-17 16:25

Had a taste comparison test on a trip once

Salmon, KG, silver whiting, goat fish, snook and rock wrasse - all caught fresh, straight into an ice slurry and cleaned promptly.  All tasted great except one.

The rock wrasse was so bad I almost had to lick my mates soap after he had showered to get the taste out of my mouth (almost).  the worst fish vote was overwhelmingly unanimous.

If I was starving on a desert island - I would starve if that's all I could catch.

I recall the survivor episode when they were "marooned" near Port Lincoln.  They were given some fishing gear (handline) and instead of fishing off the nice beach that would likely have had mullet, whiting and salmon etc. they fished off the rocks and caught (and ate) - you guessed it - rock wrasse.  I remember laughing at the time but I now feel sorry for the poor ignorant fools.

Cheers

Dusky morwong

Mon, 2014-11-17 17:24

toss up between dusky morwong and buff bream, though have tried heaps of others that are not much better than those two.

Remember Old Nick selling buffs we accidentally netted in Eagle Bay around on Easter years back, thinking they were salmon, he sold the lot by calling them Egyptian Bream, $2 each to all who asked what they were. Those who knew didn't ask. Must have been about 2 ton all up.

Soapy

Mon, 2014-11-17 19:59

During a hot little tailor session, a little soapy somehow ended up in the slurry by accident (god knows how). It was either feed it to the rays or cook it up, so on the hotplate it went. SW wind was still up, so ended up with detergent flavoured fish in a golden sand batter. Karma.

I agree with carnarvonite,

dusky morwong are just plan shitehouse ,

farmer friend of my sons quite a few years ago now speared one when we where camping down south , he loved to eat anything he caught and couldn't be put off cooking it , so I made him wait till we had cooked our meat on the bbq ,then he could cook his dusky fillets,

he didn't look so keen as his blue grey fillets hit the plate , even less when it was cooked , lol

foulest taste ever in a fish I reckon

Mon, 2014-11-17 21:41

I think their called rock cod, I was a pro with them things before I found that I liked fishing, then worked out that everyone gets them and that it's nothing to be too proud of lol. Anyway ate one one day and never doing that again.

im not a fan of bream because I feel guilty when eating them which puts me off and doesn't taste eat so I never keep them but I do love catching them for fun and the challange.

Buff Bream and Black Bream different fish

Tue, 2014-11-18 09:16

If you think Black Bream (mmm tasty) is foul, then don't eat a buff bream! However, if you want some sport, take the bream gear down to Hillarys rock wall and catch a buff bream on a bread ball!

Sorry off topic, resume.

For me, not really a fish, but couldn't stand Cuttlefish. Love squid, occy ok, caught a monster cuttle and had someone prepare it for me (I had no idea about them). Cooked up on the BBQ, one mouthfull and the Sulo got the rest.

Cheers,

Bad?

If you think that was bad, try gutting a big tiger shark that has swallowed a turtle and busting the stomach. I've smelt some pretty rotten things before but that really stank. Only did it because we wanted the turtle shell but it fell to bits in no time so was a wasted effort and a learning experience of never to do it again.

carnarvonite , the turtle

Wed, 2014-11-19 16:24

carnarvonite , the turtle story sounds familiar
years ago my fatherinlaw frank james and me dragged a big dead turtle that had washed up in mid may , all the way back up the beach at 5 mile brook , heavy as all hell , struggled with this stinking smelly dead thing the whole 1.5km back up the beach and sandhill to the trailer,

took it home to get the shell off it , and try to preserve it lol

wisdom of the old sages ,rod smith his brother inlaw advised us to bury the shell , so we did , big hole dug , in it went ,

months later we dug it up , thing fell to bits ,still incredibly smelly , as we had buried it upside down , acted like a big soup bowl in the dirt should have left it out on the farm in the trees for the ants to pick over, might have had better success , lol

Smell

Wed, 2014-11-19 20:00

Don't they have a lovely sweet smell to them, the sort that clogs your nostrils for weeks, soaks in to your hands that resists being washed out no matter what you use. Its that thick you can almost see the pong rising off it.

Have tried curried turtle and believe there is no way I would eat one without spices to cover up the taste.

Nothing wrong with queen snapper, most times I would prefer it over the vastly over rated dhufish.
With queenies, when gutting them , sift through the contents of their stomach for shells, some very valuable ones can be found.
