Yacht Rescue of Seabird

Left Hillarys at 6.30PM Tuesday and got back 11.00am Yesterday. Vessel left Mindarie and of Seabird lost part of its mast and eventually both engines. Day one of round world trip. Yacht was 46 ft and 25 tons. Took us 9 hours to tow back to Two Rock due to rough conditions (25+ Knots winds).

Vessel was too big for Lancelin or Two Rocks sea rescue to tow. Two Rocks did assist in locating the vessel approx 7nm of Seabird. Certainly one of the longest rescues I have been involved in.

Too be honest given the condition of the yacht I would not have taken for a river cruise let alone a trip around the world

I was told years ago to refer to them as WAFI's = Wind Assisted Fu&king Idiots.

He should be made to pay for the recue bill in consideration of how negligent he was.

All they do is cost people money whether its the navy, sea rescue, water police or other. I Hear of a similar incident every 6 months or so.

All the Yachtie bashers come

All the Yachtie bashers come out

Have any stats of Yachts Vs power boats that get 'rescued' every year?

Being a sailor myself, we have only ever needed help once, and it was when the bloody motor died!

Did anyone get a look at the two girls that he had onboard?

60%

Thu, 2014-10-30 16:38

My guess yachts would account for around 60% of our tows , mostly from running aground because they can't or don't know how to navigate Teggs channel at night or in daylight.

Our world famous Jon Sanders has been towed in by us twice, the only times he has needed a tow in all his travels and both of them were not from running aground but from gear failures so its not just the once a month sailor who needs assistance.

Nothing worse than getting a phone call in the middle of the night from someone who needs help getting in to port because they are not up to the task of reading charts, lights or knowing what lead lights are and have decide they want the free option of anchoring in the Fascine [which is harder to enter] instead of paying for tying up against a wharf.

Yachts v Power Boats

Thu, 2014-10-30 12:38

Yachts account for around 10% of our rescues. Don't get me wrong as I have seen some power boats that should not be on the water.

The last 2 Yacht rescue I have been involved in were the Frenchman last year who decided to leave Rockingham and sail to Carnarvon in 60+ knots wind and this one.

This guy did not seem concerned as to what had happened and in fact stated he will be under way again in a couple of weeks once repairs completed.

If I was one of the passengers I would reconsider the trip given he did not get very far and plans to go round the world.

Well it was probably just some unforeseen accident, but then when engines wouldn't start, alarm bells would have been ringing since this was a world trip. Nice crew though,,,,

In all seriousness, you've got a couple of young birds like that on board who probably don't have a clue how to sail a yacht. I might be wrong, they were lucky there were no injuries.

Prob about 10% of the tows

Fri, 2014-10-31 09:36

Prob about 10% of the tows we do are yachts. Last one a couple of weeks ago was around 40nm offshore. Had his prop shaft held in with vice grips after it snapped at the coupling.
