"most fish you can swim up to and put it above the fishes head and pull the trigger and its a kill shot".
Um, yeahhhhhh, no, that does not happen often!!!
some fish like coral trout are pretty dumb, and will look at your gun, but good luck trying to get close to dhuies, mackies, baldies, etc! thats half the fun is stalking them out.
if you can, spine shots are prefered, and sometimes head shots for holding shots. try putting a spear throught the head of a big dhu or blue groper. never gut shots, belly shots, etc (unless it cant be avoided).
depends on different factors, one is range of gun one is distance gun can reach and also sometimes on where on the fish u want to hit, with 8m u can get dhuies, i know a few places where u can get up to about 18kg if ur lucky 12kg not uncommon and 8kgs fairly often and they all in 6-10m of water
hahahaha lol scotto no not stoned! sure it was a joke tho.... never dive on the drink and i dont smoke so all good... kill shot stoned - was lookin straight at me under a big overhang - hit it thru the right eye and out back of gill plate - D E A D dead.... always a good site.... lol at comment on puttin gun on fish's head tho - it all depends on the fish species as scotto said and the water conditions... try doing that to a 8kg blackspot... all ya gotta do is fart underwater and the buggers spook! lol
depends wat wettie im wearing sam... im runnin 5 of the square ones sorry not sure exactly how much that is when im using my Riffe 3.5mm
when im using my 3mm cray suit (old one for getting scratched and cut) i go back to 3 or 4 depends on conditions....
for me personally the 5 weights give me good bouyancy at the top and just enough that i dont need to power to the bottom. few good kicks and i glide... also get the negative bouyancy in the last 4-5m of the surface which is a must incase of SWB or samba... always helps to dive with a partner too
Great catch on the spear mate - something I am yet to hit freediving.
Have lined one up once but would have only gone about 5kg and was friendly so couldnt bring myself to smack it. If it had took off or been cagey it would have been a different story.
Looks like a great dhuie (and a great shot from the sounds of it). How big did he go? Metro or not?
As for temps, was 16.5C at Hillarys yesterday (outside the marina). Last week it was around 18 (but 16 inside). Though thats surface temps. A bit of warm water on top doesnt help once you get down several meters...
Cold enough to make your outie to go to an innie, haha.
nah local gero matt... went 88cms and i called it for a shade bigger than 10kgs? was a really fat healthy fish.. these underwater pics dont do it a great deal of justice - got some of my dive buddy holding it up out of water if there are any doubters... the slatey it was sharing the undercut with woulda been another 2-3kgs bigger too was huge!
Thought so, but didnt think water got quite that cold up there so was thinking a few hours further south :p. Prob a few more of them up that way in shallow water than down here though.
gonna be picky and say i was spewing there are so many bubbles but the pic did turn out good... potm haha not so sure we let adz choose...
hahaha lucky tim! come on brother SDM mag is quality mate - i think the tuskie pic might JUST scrape in! spoke with john the editor and we see how it pans out. got a couple in the next edition (september) possible tuskie pics in the one after! some swwwwweeeet prizes tho
crikey jay i miss that warmer stuff! yet to see a stonker chinaminza yet. seen some smaller models at peron 3-5kg maybe but not a big daddy. i was up your way a few weeks back and managed a quick dive chasing few crays for a bbq. managed 4 swimming barefoot literally seems i was a smart prick and left all my gear back home. always the case!

what distances do you shoot
what distances do you shoot fish from? im sure if varies...
im probably a 8m free diver budont know how much time it takes to get set to shoot, and the range obviuosly plays its part.

yer it varies from what my
yer it varies from what my uncle tells me.
he has a long gun and most fish you can swim up to and put it above the fishes head and pull the trigger and its a kill shot.
but if you can get close im guessing you aim for the spine or head still.
cheers
