Yeah thanks Kasey, didn't realise until looking at the pic afterwards that I probably shouldn't have held it like that :S Still swam away strong, hope all is well eh. I definately won't be having fingers in gills with future fish I plan to release.

Don't worry Jay, Kasey's picked me up on my fingers in gills for released fish too. Just have to try and remove it as one of the bad fish handling habits, just so easy to forget sometime when theyre being bastards to pick up or hold.

Yeah.. I'm a bit of a critic about that, no apologies =P

A good analogy is sticking your bait and slime covered hands down your throat and touching your alveoli in your lungs... not very pleasant, and should lead to some nice infections =)

Nice fish, and bet it pulled hard, but I reckon that's a Goldy, not a bludger. Not taking away from the capture, just throwing in my 2cents (I'll post up a couple of comparisons).

I've caught plenty of goldies before and it definately doesn't look like a goldie since it lacks the gold colours they are renowned for... unless they lose them with age?

You're correct scuttlebut, my fish ID book does describe the Bludger as having an elongate body and looks more like the one you posted. Still doesn't explain what mine is... if it is a golden it's pretty pale.

Mitch, the bludger scuttlebut posted doesn't have sharp tail flutes and the one in my book doesn't appear to have sharp flutes either?

Andy, the ones you just posted look just like goldens. I've caught several Gold-Spotted Trevally round Coral Bay and they are quite silver with several gold spots on the upper half of the body.

Yeah I'll say Goldens for the two from Andy, and yes, they do become quite pale as they get bigger. Also Jay, if you compare the pic of yours to mine you'll see the same faint vertical bars. Another ID point is they often have one or two black spots on the flanks. There's a good photo of a big one in Ern Grant's book too.

Thanks for everyones help identifying the fish. After reading everyones input, comparing it with scuttlebutts goldie, and comparing it with my fish ID book I am reasonably convinced it is in fact a 'Golden' Trevally.
I can see now the verticle bars and black spot are a dead give away.

no, i said 'bait and slime covered hands', and if you want to get more technical, the passage that food goes down to the stomach and the passage that air goes down to your lungs is different.

No need to get technical.. S'all good. Atleast the species got sorted out. The message is very important, but its key to help educate without being too critical, not that you have Kasey, but it seems that its a very fine line with some people when it comes to helping them with their handling techniques before release. Thats not you either Jay, just from my experience of reading many forums about the matter.

Just saying that it is important that we learn to handle fish better. Not just yourself, but me and others as well. I think thats the messages KC was trying to get across and I was trying to reinforce it without things getting blown out of proportion.

Sorry cheif just stirring you up dont take it personaly. I have my own opinion on fish handling techniques. Not saying yours is wrong though. Then again havnt caught enough fish lately to work on my techniqe anyway.
