Some big cod live on the fault line that runs out from just off the cave. Fished it professionally years back and always meant to give it another shot but never got around to it.
Used to throw a rope with a bag on it over the top and the first one up top would tie the rope to the roo bar and back off pulling all our fish and gear up, saving us the hard job of carrying it up, were tempted to step in the bag and ride up but thought better of it, when rec fishing Quobba in the late sixties and early seventies.
Yeah really deep there. I was baitcasting with no sinker and had to wait a veery long time for it to sink. I remember standing on that lower reef ledge on a low tide and the swell was non-existent one year and just holding the rod over the edge like a jetty.
If I remember correctly its about 15 fathoms about casting range off the shore all the way along the cliffs right to Red Bluff fron Whistling rock area.
Early 2000's surfing Gnarloo Tombstones two massive Tiger sharks were harassing a group of pro body boarders from Sydney. Fuck paddling out, let's go fishing,
We headed south to Caves cranking Primus on the Ford falcon panel van. I'd never fished it but had heard of the spot. Got to the top and looked down to see a group fishing a good looking ledge (Caves). As we got down they left as the swell was solid and building although still felt safe. Was fishing an Alvey bait casting a Mulie on light ball sinker. Had 5 casts for 3 big cobia 2 Spaniards and got smashed by something huge which was a Billfish or huge Tuna as I've never had the 650 spin so fast. We left after an hour with the 5 fish back to a solid 6" to 8" Gnarloo, low tide, anyone that has surfed solid Tombstones and fished Caves in a day knows that it's a beautiful special place.
Thanks for sharing that story, it's what fishwrecked is all about in my opinion - and you definitely did better than my trip and we were using the latest braids and lures, fluorocarbon leaders etc. you guys just came in and smashed it with some mulies on mono on spinfishers lol
