Is the eagle ray the one with the big square boxy looking head? I wasn't sure if they are called southern rays.
I caught one off Shoalwater Bay beach last night- lost two whoppers and landed the third (about 1.2m across) after about 35 minutes. They were swimming right up to my feet at the drop off- some were huge(to me)- maybe 2m across.
First big thing I ever caught, you're right easy snag- man they go. Emptied about 200m off the spool on a heavier drag than I've ever used, still screamed off the reel and splashed around on the surface about 4 times well over 100m out.
Did you gaff that to get him out? I couldn't pull mine up the sand (I was knackered lol) and eventually he just gnawed his way through the 40lb leader.
I was by myself- never caught one before and all I could see was this barbed tail that seemed about 6 feet long with those eyes glowing in the light of my cap, and yeah, he looked really pissed off...I'm thinkin "do I cut the line or try and get my hooks back?" Lol I couldn't drag him up the beach anyway, wasn't gonna try and flip him in his territory in the water so I reckon I need a gaff now.
Fishing. Another hobby where the better you go the more it costs...
Have gaffed many in the mouth over the years when fishing the jetties and they swim off fine, plenty of ones i have caught around there sport scars from gaf shots. Larger ones are best left in the water and the leader cut as the gaff will tear through their flesh due to the weight.
Off the beach tho, wash them into the shallows and remove the hooks, they are heaps easier to handle in the wash zone than on dry land.
