Not a gurnard
Its a western scorpion cod. The Gurnard is the mottled yellow one. Both have venomous spines. Be careful with these fish.

scorpion fish or gurnard ,
scorpion fish or gurnard , either way they are poisonous if you get spiked by them but they are great eating, we have kept the bigger ones before but you got to be carefull not to get the spike in as it causes a fair bit of stinging pain for quite a while, i know from first hand experience

scorpion fish
i caught heaps of them when i went on my last charter, along with 2 swallowtails and a blackass ( Breaksea Cod ), and a couple of wrasse

poison....
the poison can make you go into Cardiac arrest, some other fish can do so aswell, flathead, stone fish, catfish, leather jacket, cobbler and many more....
