no Gamex is not solely a T&R event. There are heaviest sections including one for the heaviest marlin. Generally tho few billfish are weighed with T&R being the preferred option by most.
many of these fish have just been dumped with the rubbish.
I'd like to think that they do the right thing and eat the fish, but reality is that they'd have at least a few hundred kilos of marlin to move - I dont think it will all find a home so to speak which is a shame.
from 1989 through to 2005 and only missed one year when i went to the US.The marlin that got weighed in would get divided up around town put in smokers and bought back the next night for nibbles at the gantry. As far as im aware of none went to waste at all. That being said it was not very often one was bought back in.The shear amount of billfish caught and tagged this year in the comp this year it does not surprise me a couple have gone belly up.
How do they ensure that people are doing the right thing in regards to line class and fish weight?
Ive heard of a few that dont quite add up (2009) let alone people using leaders to skull drag fish in by berlying and hooking beside the boat (not Marlin) and not even using the stated line class??
Correct me if I'm wrong but is that how honest fisherman do it these days??
ENSURE that people are doing the right thing. This can only be achieved by having independent observers on every boat. Anglers must abide by the GFAA and IGFA rules. There is, or at least there was a statement in these rules that said "Captures in which the fish has not fought or has not had a chance to fight do not reflect credit on the fisherman, and only the angler can properly evaluate the degree of achievement in establishing the record."
At the end of the day it is up to the honesty of those onboard each boat. Sure people will have views but I'm sure as hell not going there!!!

Adam mentioned on one of the other posts that these fish died while being caught.
They were weighed and then butchered and divvied up amongst the crowd

Both fish, 106kg and 99.9kg went in a flash on Thursday. It was filleted and distributed to whoever wanted it, in front of the crowd.
