Moonraker at Floreat Drain
Peter (Vans) and I decided to try Swanbourne Drain on Thursday night. Fantastic conditions (probably a bit too nice with no wind at all), surprisingly few people fishing there.
Vans was keen to try out his new behemoth of a rod - a 16 foot Monnraker. We started off tossing out a few lures. Vans was sending his out of sight. That Moonraker is the best long distance casting rod I have ever seen. We had a few follows and one hookup, but then the action dropped off.
Switched to mulies. Soon had a few herring, some juvenile salmon and some small tailor coming into the burley trail.
Ended up with about a dozen herring, three jucenile salmon and about eight tailor and a whiting. Kept a few herring and the largest tailor (about 38 cm).
Vans hooked up to what we at first hoped was a mulloway on a fillet of whiting. Ended up being a nasty little stingray.
As you can see by the two pics. It was a beautiful evening. Just shows you how lucky are.
Geat to catch up with Vans. A good bloke and a super keen fisherman.
If you have some spare time over the next few days I would recommend a fish down Floreat way. There quite a few fish around, and according to reports from guys fishing just north of us, that includes a few mulloway.

Thats should have been Floreat. Yes, it was a great night. A little bit of breeze might have helped bring in some bigger tailor, but otherwise it was a perfect night.

I need a new modern beach
I need a new modern beach rod, so will be looking at the Moonraker for sure.
They look great on the Bluewater site.

As Vans will tell you, they are very light for their size. The long butt can be a bit awkward, and they are not a rod you can rest in a gimbal because of that. But they cast a mile and if you want a rod that can cast a lure way out there when you are chasing salmon from the beach, they are ideal.
I know I want one.

Yes definitely a long butt, i have comfort issues and i'm 6'4!
I was chatting to a guy at Bluewater Scarb on Sat afternoon, He has one and instead of chopping the butt, is going to put a second lower mount below the exising one. Will be interesting to see!

Beautiful Conditions
With a bit of luck the salmon will turn up for the metro crew in force again this year. Had a great run with them over at Rotto last year in the April School holidays. There was a few small ytk's mixed in with them as well.
