it take 6 weeks plus to cycle the tank then takes a while to get it where u want, ie a couple fish/coral at a time. um if u research it and stick to wat is said ie water 5-10% change every week and test every week. I do have to say it is very expensive to start up but i think worth every penny, um where do u live i know a few good spot around perth that can help you. um to answere your question its taken about 8 months to this stage, lost two fish since then.
fyi you need a pump 10x water volume of tank per hour ie 120ltr=1200lph filter
a heater, protien skimmer, lights blue and white and a wave maker or powerhead for water movement
then you need 1kg of live rock per 5lts of water
substraight, i use crushed coral
and a couple water containers for salt and fresh (same as in fresh tank) water. salt u bye at store for like 15c-25c per litre and fresh to top up from evap.
look mate i not gonna lie this is a full on hobby if u got time and money go for it, it is heaps of fun and amazing to have a coral reef in a living room look any more questions email me at rotaryboy13b@hotmail.com. oh might i add that i can hand feed my clown fish and coral!!!!!!!

Nice
How long has it taken to get to that stage?
i've got a big tank and cabinet, with moulded glass on corners that i had tropical fish in.
We were going to go salt water but then backed out, we were worried about the upkeep and stabilisation etc
cheers
