Sambo on the Solterra

Sambo on the Solterra

New left hand wind Okuma Solterra was well and truly christened today. This Sambo was one that gave me curry.

The Solterra is exceptionally smooth. Not sure I had it matched to the right rod though, as at times I thought I was going to snap the rod and quickly aimed it back at the fish a bit to take some of the pressure off th erod and back onto the reel, but a very smooth drag and plenty of power had the fish boatside after a great fight. Fishing 30lb braid.
Big handle made winding up a breeze and so its definailty taken the place of my old Penn 321 as reel of choice for metro bottom bouncing. Just need a left hand wind overhead trolling reel without levelwind to complete the set.

Was the fact that I found it difficult to get the reel into overstrike quickly to stop a couple of trophy fish that burried me in the reef. The button to press in was a little stiff and maybe it just takes time getting used to it. If I had a better rod I would have given a double thumb lock on it but I wasn't confident and wanted some play in the line. Hence the overstrike, but I was too slow.
