Down Perth way we dont tend

Wed, 2012-01-11 12:56

Down Perth way we dont tend to get blacktip reef sharks (which are a more tropical species). As far as I can tell, most of the sharks with black tips caught around the metro region are spinner sharks.

The black tip on the tail and the pointy nose fits a spinner shark too. I dont think bronzies ever have black tips?

I used this btw: http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/op/op001/fop001.pdf

Spinner

Looks like a spinner to me, similar to blacktip but yours has the long pointy snout of a spinner, Bronzies have the same pointy snout but are more coppery coloured. Hope that helps.

Eating

Best to bleed them asap as they build up amonia and it spoils the taste.

Gut

Better still to get the guts and the brown strip along the spine, the longer you leave that in the more ammonia you are going to get through the flesh

If it was a spinner

Did it go a little nuts. My experience with them is that they fight with more determination than most other whalers, and in shallow waters jump like mako's. Great fun IMO to catch.
