Thorny Devil

Thought I'd throw this up as something a bit different, close up profile of a thorny devil.

What cool creatures, they
What cool creatures, they are very common if you keep your eyes peeled on the dirt roads in the Kalbarri national parks. Apparently they have to consume a crazy amount of ants per day to survive.

Devil eggs
Saw an article in a paper years back.
When the yanks had their navy ships coming in for R+R years back, some kids in Gero had a couple of thorny devils in a cardboard box plus a heap of double gees. The were selling the double gees for a couple of bucks each as mountain devil eggs and getting rid of plenty.

They actually have grooves
They actually have grooves on their body, so when the morning dew collects on them, it can get channeled to their mouth.

and dont forget...
They can also stand in water and it runs up into their mouth through cappillary action.
And what a walk they have.....
And like whales that each have a unique tail pattern each Molock has a completely unique pattern on the underbelly.
Bury their eggs a meter deep and the little buggers dig out........
Molock hurridus considering we're back in Zoology 101

Lots of them on the road
Lots of them on the road between Coral Bay and Exmouth at the moment, they love the warmth off the hot bitumen, and the big ant hills.
