Hmm I've heard the saying "don't grab a tiger by the tail" I think it might apply to big black sods of rays as well.
A ray that size would have a very nasty and long barbed spike some where just about where your hand is.
When bottom bashing from shore at night I just about always take a length of plastic conduit with me to place over the tail of these brutes from the black lagoon thus neutralizing the sting in the tail. This makes removing hooks and releasing them so easy.
The use of the conduit is not my idea, a F/W member posted the idea on here a year or so ago, good idea.
