Today's Dhuie

Today's Dhuie

Screen shot from a movie we made this morning of my 14.5kg Dhuie, caught about that far and a bit more out from Mindarie. Love the size of it's gob.

Bigger than it looks

Sun, 2006-02-12 10:53

I weighed it at 14.5kgs on the boga grip scales but the only pics I had of it on the camera were with a big bow in the belly as I struggled to lift the weight and it wrapped around me making it look shorter. The original pics didn't look that impressive, but on the video it looked like a monster.

Here is a pic with the bow in the middle which makes it look a lot smaller than in the vid shot.

[img_assist|fid=14121|thumb=1|alt=Same fish different shot|caption=Looks smaller than it really was because of the bend in the body as it wrapped around me. Check out the video screen shot in the brag board for a better indication of the size.]

I wouldn't worry Andy

about it lookin any smaller than it really is - it looks like a thumper to me - with a mouth the size of a bucket! I don't think anyones going to dispute it being a beauty!

My tummy rumbled as I imagined you takin the fillets off, BBQ sizzlin in the background!

Is it just me, or are Dhuis really getting bigger n bigger over the years?.

When I was a kid, my parents fished outta Lancelin a LOT for dhui's...I mean a lot - many trips a year for many years.

a 20 pound Dhui was something to talk about.

a 30 pound was the fish of a lifetime - everyone in town knew about it!

Now days people seem to catch 30 pounders pretty regularly such that it isn't the talking point it once was and 40 pound plus fish are showing up more n more regularly!!!

I don't belive it's because of better boats or better electronics - pro' lobster guys fished the shelf with paper sounders - my ol man used to go on overnighters with the lobster boys and he still never brought home 30 or 40 pound Dhui's in all his life! (but lots round 20 pound)

I have a pet theory...

I reckon the cray industry and all the bait they pour into our waters, somehow is changing the food chain / environment (favouring the dhui's..).

It might be that so many are caught now - their numbers are thinned out and theres more occy/cuttlefish for those left to eat and grow faster..or maybe the cray industry is breeding up more occys with all the free feeds the burglars get out of cray trapped in the pots and as a result the Dhui's get more / bigger occys to eat so are growing bigger?

You know - when your a kid - everything seems larger than life...so you might expect I would remember big dhui's as something "bigger than they really were" - as an adult, - but not so!

I would swear on a stack of Bibles - the dhuis are getting bigger every year since I was a kid and the ones we used to catch wouldn't rate at all against those being caught today!

Soo - any one have a theory as to why the Dhui's are getting bigger?

Cheers!

I seriously doubt it.

IMHO the Dhuies are getting fewer and farther between, we still catch and release an average 3 or 4 undersize Dhuie's per trip.

The GPS systems that have been in existance and now affordable have set recreational fishing catches through the roof. Now I can hit my favourite spot, which is a reef covered bomie in 40m of water that is the size of a standard dining room and is only 1.5m up from the bottom. I dare say ,many anglers drive right over the top of it or 10m to the side, but I head straight to it and "BANG" I'm on!

Also the fact that digital photo's are now within the reach of every man and his dog, the ease of sharing photo's means that only the biggest ones get published. So every one that makes it into the newspaper or into all those great magazines is the biggest one out of the bunch that were taken that month. Previously it was a miracle if anyone took a picture of their dhuie and posted it to a magazine. Normally it would just sit on the mantle piece to be admired by the family and visitors.

I think that just like all girls think they are fat, because they keep seeing pictures of supermodel skin and bone, all anglers think that their dhuies are small compared to the ones in the mags. I think it is that subliminal message of all the dhuie pictures that is creating such an opinion.

I am working on getting anonymous ftp working Jay, but its pretty complicated and I'm not sure how easy it will be for people to get the hang of. At the moment I'm trying to figure out why a lot of the old content is being displayed on the frontpage when you are signed in as a member, and when you aren't signed in all the new content is up. Wierd!

Thanks Andy, it was just a bit of experimenting with the video function on our Digi Cam but it came out alright. Next time will be better though as we got a proper video camera now. Unfortunately I wasn't a proud fishwrecked shirt owner at that stage but I've got one now! Next time you see one of my videos I'll be wearin' it!

Cheers Adam I'll check it out ;))
