It looks just like a greyband
It looks just like a greyband except it does not have white tips on the fins.....all our greyband have these white tips....
It looks half way between a GB and a bass groper....don't think it is a bass groper though.
Not sure.....

Yeh, strange one. No white
Yeh, strange one.
No white tips at all so I don't think its a greyband.
70m is very shallow too.
It does not really look like a Rankin either. I have seen them with no really white markings before, but that one has a light belly and the shape of the head is wrong.

No white tips
I missed that when I first looked. And 70m as has been pointed out is shallow for greyband. I'm not sure now???
Might be one for our expert Glenn Moore.

I'm calling that a Rankin
I'm calling that a Rankin too, especially for the depth and it's size. Thats about as big as they get. We caught one in Exmouth that was pushing 850mm and we where confused as it didn't look like a Rankin as it didn't have the white spots/blotches but once it was spiked and on ice you could start to see the colour around the belly and face.
If you look at it's head there you can see a faint few blotches there and looking back at the many Rankin's i've caught all the fins look identcal

Rankin
Rankin that has come up from the bottom too quickly. Seen them lose their normal colour and look the same as that when you spike them.

It has no white margins I know, but otherwise it sure looks like this greyband of Hlokk's.

Big rankin.
Thats a big rankin about as big as they get. Spots fade with age. Just a question was it full of parisites like the ones we get in exmouth. Some of the really bigs ones that come through our park are riddled with all sorts of worms and parisites.

Hmm
I'm not convinced that is a rankin due to the eyes, will send to Glenn.

Rankin Cod
I'm going with Rankin Cod Epinephelus multinotatus. There are some good pale blotches on the cheek.
Do you have a better photo of the tail - at least a photo that shows the whole tail?
Look at Bucko's photo above and the tail is an easy character to use. Rankin Cod has a crescent or 'lunate' tail (literally means 'moonlike'). Eightbar (Greyband) has a rounded tail. Easy

What cod is it
WOW lots of opinions just like what's been happening with me and my mates .I will mention when caught was Iki jimi and put in an ice slurry upon taking out for cleaning it was very slimey and still had no coloring like the other rankings caught with it .It did have some small parasites in the gut and wing areas like the other rankin though. Will load some more pics in the morning guys just for GLEN to check out .hlokks grey band does look different to mine . Could I have caught some sort of HYBRID rankin bar cod thing .? Might has to call sculls and mouldering from the
