Looks like a dusky morwong or a goldspot sweetlip. But yep, bit difficult to determine, did it go on the plate and how did it taste?

Pink when you caught it, grey when it died.  Sand snapper/sweetlip/blubberlip morwong/slate bream/blackall. That fish has many different names.

sand snapper

Sun, 2009-03-29 22:10

i caught 1 off onslow last year and didnt know what it was. looked in an ID book to find it was a sand snapper (poor eating).

too wide for a dusky and i think goldspot (painted) sweetlep are only caught in southers waters. although it is very similar to one.
