my mulloway goal

my challenge is to catch a nice mulloway as i never have,

i have a great opportunity with me going to geraldton in jan...

so what are the best baits, rigs guys?

is it absolutely vital to chuck an all nighter to get a mulla???

cheers,

Reuben

Mullas

I find fresh whiting a great bait for Mullaway. Then again... they are spooky fish and will play with most anything. They are notorious for picking up and blowing out so a good couple off sharp hooks are necessary and some patience. Let the fish run. Don't strike until you think the fish has decided that's what he really want's to eat. A bit like watching my grandaughter play with food.. LOL

All nighters are the way to go if you are serious but I have caught them during the day also and it comes back to patience. In the gutters is the place and often, that's 5 meters from where you are standing...Use a running sinker.. and as lite as you can depending on the conditions.

Merry Xmas Smile

Cheers, Vince

No mulloway i have ever

Tue, 2008-12-23 19:42

No mulloway i have ever caught has been from an all nighter, usually around 12-1am.

Fresh squid is my favourite bait followed by live slimies, scalies or yellowtail second. I dont bother with mulies or frozen baits i find them useless unless im going for tailor.

The rig i use is;

- about 4ft of 60lb leader 50lb or even 40lb to shy down or i am on a beach , i use jinkai plus as it is pretty supple and ok in abrasion resistance.

-2 snelled 6/0-8/0 circle hooks (gamakatsu ones as they are sharp strong and good price)

-Sinker always depends on spot and tide/current but i prefer to use weightless baits (usually on jetties, river, rocks or where conditions allow )

-All this on 30lb braid, havnt been busted off yet.

________________________

when live baiting try to match the hatch as they say as the mulloway will be switched on to hunting the fish that are in the area. Plenty of squid around, use squid, plenty of yakkas around, use yakkas.

When i live bait i Never powercast 50m and have my fish belly flopping on top of the water either coming off hook or getting knocked out, Instead (dont know if anyone else uses this apart from OT) I place the bait in the water, flcik the bail arm and allow it to swim out (no harm to the fish, no stunning effect and gives it a longer lifespan in my experience, i have live baits who survive 5 or 6 hours then i just let them go).

One hook at the head and one at the tail, with squid, dead baits and live baits.

The last two mulloway we got there were on live tailor at about 12:30am (bigger one) and 1:30am (10kg one)

Fisho - an all nighter would increase your chances, but it is

Wed, 2008-12-24 07:32

not necessarily the answer. I caught two good mulloway in two nights once in Geraldton - both of them were hooked up just before dark. Live baits would certainly give you a better chance, but I have caught a few mulloway on mulies and others on fresh fillets. Tailor fillets would be my favourite.
The big thing is patience. Have the patience to wait it out and don't start worrying if you haven't hooked one yet. And as Vince said, having the patience to let the fish take your bait when it picks it up.

bes tactic. i find.. get as many ppl as u can with 1-2 rods each.. then all cast at differnt distances along th same beach/rock line. make all riggs identical.. if no hookups in about 2 hours. then half of them change rigs around and baits.. get about 6 ppl for this to work.. any mulloway that even thinks of coming near is gonna get hooked

Mulloway in Geraldton

Fri, 2009-11-13 09:26

Reuben, I live in Geraldton and chase mulloway all the time if you would like I would be happy to show you some of the locations when you are up this way. long nights are not required and most locals use mullet strips as well as tailor. most fish around town are around the twelve kg size with the odd bigger fish. Sharks often turn up along the beach as well and dont be surprised if you hook a Cobia or mackeral.
