Abalone thieves given heavy fines!

Abalone thieves given heavy fines
Date: March 2008

Three people received fines between $1,150
and $1,540 in Joondalup Court this week, after pleading guilty to
illegal fishing during the 2007 West Coast Zone abalone season.

35-year-old
Lei ZHANG of East Perth was found to be in possession of 51 abalone (31
above the limit), when he was questioned by a Fisheries and Marine
Officer on the last day of the season. On Wednesday (12 March 2008) a
magistrate fined him $1,540.

34-year-old Masaaki HORIKOSHI of
Perth had 29 abalone more than the daily bag limit of 20, when his
catch bag was inspected on 2 December last year – which led to a $1,480
fine this week.

Also, on Wednesday, 45-year-old Gary Michael
GAFFNEY of Joondalup was ordered to pay $1,150 for being in possession
of 18 abalone more than the limit on the second Sunday of the 2007
season.

North Metro Compliance Manager Todd A’Vard said, in
order to manage the fishery in a sustainable way, the West Coast Zone
abalone season was only open to recreational fishers for one hour each
Sunday morning between 4 November and 9 December last year, but a small
number of fishers wrongly took more abalone than they should have.

“Those
who break the abalone bag or possession limits are stealing from a
limited community resource and the Department of Fisheries is always
well prepared for the season and ready to prosecute any law-breakers,”
Mr A’Vard said.

This week’s cases follow five other recent court
appearances for offenders prosecuted over fisheries crime during the
2007 abalone season in the metropolitan area.

Last Friday, in a
Perth court, 43-year-old Nowardy HANDY of Cannington was fined $1,580,
for having 24 abalone in excess of the possession limit (of 20) when
her catch bag was inspected by a Fisheries and Marine Officer at North
Beach on Sunday 9 December.

36-year-old Paul John BALLARDIN from
North Beach was last month fined $2,800 in a Perth court for taking 23
abalone too many (including five that were undersize), when his catch
was checked at Mettam’s Pool beach on Sunday 25 November.

On
the opening day of the 2007 abalone season (4 November) 49-year-old Su
Van NGUYEN of Westminster was found with 33 abalone above the bag limit
when he was stopped at Ocean Reef. He was last month fined $1,600 in
Joondalup.

In the same court, 63-year-old Tomislav MARKOVIC of
Duncraig was ordered to pay $1,330 for taking 24 abalone too many, when
questioned at Ocean Reef on 2 December and 48-year-old Tan Cong DANG of
Hocking was fined $1,210 for collecting double the bag limit, when he
had his catch inspected on a Mindarie beach on 11 November 2007.

It's funny how bag limits mean nothing to these people and they're happy to take the risk, a criminal record sticks for life but Wink

Evinrude E-Tech against 4 Strokes

Hi Guys

Thinking of getting a boat around 6 metre and was wondering if anyone has a evinrude e-tech 2 stroke motor and any info on them. Some people tell me they are more economical than a 4 stroke and a much better engine and some people tell me that they are rubbish and that 4 strokes are better. If anyone has some valuable info to fill me in on that would be great.

Thanks

Night fishing

Just wondering how the catch rate compares during the night as to fishing during the daylight hours.

I know some species like tailor & mullas are far better dusk/dawn/during the night.

But if tide, moon ect. conditions were equal, can anyone tell me if Dhuies, Pinkies, Skippy and the likes, are hungrier, same or forget it during the night hours Undecided

Question 2: Do Wrasse ever sleep?

Gamex !!!

Jen from Exxy was on the radio and one record that looks to be set is a 149.2 kg Black Marlin on 15kg line class, previous being 50 something.
And InDeep looks to have another record possability with a Broadbill sawfish.
And the Exxy game fishing club has a Supergrand slam of 4 billfish in a day,Broadbillsawfish,Black marli, Blue marlin and sailfish.

i was wondering if it was to late in the year to try for some mullas in the river around chidleys point somewhere. any help would be great thanks.

RST

Well I finally got time to do my Skippers ticket and I must say that I picked up on some new information which will help with the boating pleasure even more. For those NOR who are yet to obtain their RST I would highly recommend the Whitfords Sea Rescue team. I chose to do the complete 2 day training course which cost a small sum of $240.00 and am now a lot more wiser for it. Apart from having a great weekend on the course you can be proud to say that the funds go back into the Whifords Sea Rescue and who knows I may need to call on them some day. Almost forgot to add that the Sea Rescue people are all volunteers so thanks guys and girls for your efforts into making our waters safer for all.

P.S. Yes I passed

Cheers

Salmon movements

I am wondering if anyone has any authentic words on the salmon action down south. I have heard and read mixed reports with some suggesting that there is no action and others suggesting the opposite.
I am heading down Smith's Beach/Yallingup on Thursday so I am hoping that there may been some salmon seen around the area recently - or even better - heading that way.
Many thanks, Colin Hay

Esperance over Easter

Gday all,

I'm heading to Esperance for the long weekend and was wondering if anyone knew what I might be able to get down there?

Reckon salmon will be floating around down there or will all be gone north?

Any suggestions on what beaches to try would be great, got a 4WD while im down there and a few quad bikes so no real restrictions on where to go Wink

Thanks in advance!

Fisherman bashed

A 24-year-old fisherman remains in a serious condition in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital after he was bashed at a beach near Perth yesterday.

Police say he was hit over the head with a torch after a fight broke out with another man during a camping trip near the Alkimos wreck.

A 25-year-old man from Craigie has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and will appear in court on Wednesday.

Sergeant Nick Steel says the victim faces a long recovery period.

"He still has extensive fractures to the face, including a broken jaw, several fractures around his upper head, one near his eye socket on the right hand side that's caused bruising and bleeding around the brain," he said.

Sergeant Steel says the man was on the phone to his wife just moments before the bashing and she called police for help.

"The lady's heard some of the commotion, heard some groaning and called the police straight away so it was very lucky that he happened to be talking to her on the phone at the time and our response was a little bit quicker.

Dinghy fishing in the Pilbara

Gday guys just wondering what the inshore fishing is like in the Karratha area? I'm moving up to Tom Price soon from Esperance, and will be hitting the coast for a fish as often as I can and was wondering if it was worth bringing my 375 rooftopper or is most of the better fishing done offshore in decent boats?

Pilbara Brad and Jay Burgess, you blokes would be in the know?

 Cheers for any help

Hillarys

headed down to the north wall of hillarys for an efternoon/evening session and ended up staying till 11 o'clock! caught 1 butterfish that engulfed the hook right ino its gullet so we had to snap its neck and get the hook out.
thats all the action we had for a number of hours but when i went for a walk upto the lighthouse, i saw these guys bringing in herring and yellowtail consistently with every cast! we only had the alvey out at the time so i decided to have a few casts and try to get me some herring and yellowies. 10 casts later i didnt have a set of gangs left on my rig!
met up with kaitan and he mentioned he might be going to the other side

Wasting food!!

Last night headed down to hilaries, thinking of going squiding and crabbing. When I arrive, it was crowded!!!! and on the jetty on the left side, as I walk down the steps....I saw a sambo and 3 red snappers was eaten!! clean on 1 side it's body....My thinking is that people went out on the charter and came back with the fish and decided that they didnt want it so they throw the fish back when it's dead. Anyone have any opinion about this?

windy???

so as usual the terrible wind forecast for this morning is not happening #$%@&%
