The 12 hour Tailor, shark and mulla sesh!!!
hi guys this is my first report hope it goes alright.... A mate and I decided to spend an allnighta a few hours nth of perth (between lancilin and cervantes) ;) to do a late arvo tailor sesh, early night for shark(bronze whaler we after) then go for mulloway from 12 to dawn till the tailor bite again in the morning. WOT A CRACKER OF A SESH WE HAD!!!.
got the lines by 5:30 arvo, first cast!!! Mates on to his PB tailor in seconds while i'm still baiting up!! From then on we landed tailor after tailor, there were jumping all over the place. The smallest one being 43cm and the largest 59cm! we both landed 10 each about in an hour and a half, we kept 3 for dinner and due to some ferious hookups, some were fatal so ended up filleting 2 for bait. aahhh finally a smoke and a drink break before cooking some very fresh tailor on the gas burner. Perfect!! but.. its far from over.....
We then walked up the beach to a point where very shallow sandy waters meet a drop off that runs into some deeper reefy sections. We change rigs to capture a shark or two and on go the fillets! 2 beach rods 50m apart. Now the waiting game..... didnt have to wait long within 5 to 10 min my reel sizzles.. then nothing. i'm baiting up again my mate reel screaming for 15sec, then nothing!! WTF is going on!! Out go our baits almost instantly on again and again spat the hooks. 2min later my mates on finally hooked. with not more than a 40 sec fight a small bronzie appeared in the shallows absolutley exhausted!!! We beach him!! This little shark has been going back and forth taking our baits!!!! My mates first bronzie and i have to congratulate him on that!! we had i big bust off with a large run of about 200m before busting on reef! It took a whole large tailor head. WTF?? landed an eagle ray small one.
By this stage it bout 2 in the morning and nothing was seeming to fire so we rested up and got a lines back in at first light for a few casts at the tailor before heading off. and i was rewarded with the biggest tailor of the trip.
all and all very good trip but not perfect... still no mulla

Great night by the sound of it - good tailor too!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

thanking you tonyT. would love to know wot the hell took that tailor head for a run. i dont think a large ray would take a big tailor head. Got us scratching ours heads, peeled of line so quick and there was no way of stopping it. Tiger possibly???

big rays love a tailor head,
big rays love a tailor head, youd be suprised how big a bait they can scoff. Not saying it wasnt a tiger or something but tailor heads are a top bait for the flying carpets.

well we are kinda hoping it
well we are kinda hoping it was ray, but i've hooked very large rays before and they have run 100m - 150m tops before burying itself. this just seems to go and go and go. and even built up more speed past the 100m mark, there was no way of stopping it. We just hoping we didnt loose something special

if it helps you feel any
if it helps you feel any better me and mates have been stripped 400m + by the big b@stards on pretty heavy gear, can normally pick them pretty quick though so if it didnt feel like a ray.....
How were you getting the big baits out, just casting from the beach?

just casting about 30m
just casting about 30m between a reef and sand drop off. not far out at all. i sorta sussed the spot out and thought maybe this would be a good spot for a shark as there was shallow sandy sections around the reef aswell

Looks like a cracker of a sesh Ealzee. Most likely a shark of some kind that took the Tailor head. There's no shortage of them off the northern beaches. As for the frozen shark better than fresh, I think it's an individual sort of thing. Personally I think shark fillets are better after being frozen for a week or so, especially Gummy Shark but I know plenty of others that prefer it to have not been frozen. Freeze one side & have the other fresh & see which one you prefer. I imagine the species & how it is treated immediately after capture would have some impact to.

the tailor up there are in
the tailor up there are in plague proportions was quite amazed how fast they were hitting the baits. even tried a plug out there with no luck still. Have to go and invest in those halco twisty's everyone keeps raving about. We tried to release her but the hooks where right down below the gill plates, tried swimming with it for about 15min with no kick so we really had no choice but to keep it. Was a bit of a shame really cos there is nothing better than landing a beaut fish and seeing swim off healthy, i'm sure my mate will make sure someone enjoys it as i dont like the taste of shark

Nice Sesh!!
Top stuff, sounds like a great session! I generally prefer to freeze shark before eating but will also eat it fresh. I find that most times the ammonia is reduced by very quickly bleeding and removing all fins and head then get it chilled on ice quickly. I generally bleed em by cutting off the tail (they pump blood out well when this is done). I then normally cut of the head and all fins within about 10 minutes and get the trunk on ice. When filleting I stay off the skin a bit and also trim a bit away from the center cartiledge. seems to help.
cheers
