17.6kg Mulloway in Cockburn Sound
Good mate, Manie Bekker and I decided to do a short session hunting Mulloway in Cockburn Sound on Friday night. We do not normally chase Mulloway in a Waxing Crescent with an outgoing tide, but we were desperate to get a bait in the water.
We launched from Woodman Point just as the sun was setting and after a short 5.5km trip found a bommie in 10m indicating good fish holding close to it. We dropped the anchor up wind from the bommie and within minutes of burleying were catching an assortment of baitfish. We filled the live well with Herring, Snoek, Butterfish, Trumpeter, Bream and even a Chopper Tailor.
Manie attached a Herring to two 4/0 hooks on a 60lb trace with the other end driven by a Penn 850 filled with 40 lb braid. At around 8 PM we hooked a Snoek which managed to pick up Manie's live bait line. While I was trying to untangle the lines Manie's 40lb braid suddenly started pulling through my fingers. We quickly cut off the Snoek trace and Manie set the hook into the fleeing fish. He immediately donated about 30m of line from the Penn as the fish dashed for it's freedom. Another 10 minutes later and a couple of short bursts, we managed to pick up the fish's number plate - a decent Mulloway of over a meter. After carefully slipping the landing net under the fish and bringing it aboard we started celebrating. Manie's Mulloway measured a magical 120 cm and a mass of 17.6 kg, beating my previous best Cockburn Sound Mulloway of 113cm.
Unfortunately the fish was hooked well within its gut and we were unable to release it as it had lost a lot of blood.
At about 10 PM the Southerly started picking up and after I lost a decent fish we decided to call it a night. We look forward to our next session on this wonderful fishery.

Raymarine Dragonfly
Hi Scano. It is a Raymarine Dragonfly with down vision. Go and Google it. I have not seen a sounder that provides such good definition in all my years of fishing and also very affordable. I run the Navman and Raymarine at the same time and you cannot believe the difference.

very nice!
Do you put the livie out under a float or something?
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

No float
No float - three way swivel, one side to main line, one to light weight approx 10cm, the other to trace approx 90 cm. Allow the live bait to swim and sinker keeps the bait "in the zone".
There are many different traces for Mulloway - this one seemed to work on the night. I always try and keep the resistance as little as possible because the large Mulloway are sly old fish.

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.
