Theres 15000 photos on the site not including whats in the forums, if i let them all be full size at 5 + meg i have to increase the server hosting. Its already really expensive to host the site so i have to keep it under control to keep the site load speeds fast.
You don't neccisarily have to crop the picture to reduce the file size. You can compress the file size, etc... you'll reduce the resolution, but all the photo is still there. If you're on a PC, I find the easiest way to reduce the file size is to bring the photo up on your computer, and take a screenshot. Then paste the screenshot into microsoft paint, crop away the tool bars and whatnot in the screenshot, and save the image - its usually less that 500KB once you do that.

Or on newer Windows (7-8+?) just right click it and "resize picture" to Large"
it'll go down to 200kb
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Software
There's a great, free bit of software called Irfanview that can resize photos with minimal loss to the quality.
