2-Stroke oil ratio

OK so I have an old 96 evinrude 115hp thats had the oil injection system disconnected and I'm running 50 to 1 premix. Trouble is she smokes a fair bit at low speeds and it kind of kills the enjoyment factor of cruising around rivers slowly with the family. I was planning on filling my sub tank with 100 to 1 ( half the oil ) , and making  sure I dont go over 5 knots. Anyone think this is a really bad idea?

What I mean is, I want to intentionally run less oil at low revs, like an oil injection system would. Im just not sure what ratio my VRO system would have been providing at about 5 knots.

What brand oil do you use? I find that using Quicksilver premium  plus is less smokey than a couple other brands I've used.

Duno what ratio is meant to be for that donk, but may not be a bad thing running less oil. Alot of people think they are doing the engine good buy having a higher oil content in their mix, when in actual fact its doing more harm than good. Will foul plugs and cause starting and running issues but more importantly, it will cause premature wear and even cause a piston to sieze. More oil, less fuel, runs lean, runs hot, greater piston expansion and oil break down from the heat results in damage. Id use a high quality synthetic and a mix rate with the min required oil with premium fuel only, or better yet, upgrade to a 4 banger

"Since 1993, the VRO is actually called an oil metering system (OMS). The ratio averages about 60:1, slightly leaner at idle and slightly richer at full throttle. The older pumps idled between 150:1 (prior to 1990) and 100:1 (1990-1992), then richened up to 50:1 as the engine load increased"

Thats the only info I've found so far. Not sure exactly what "slightly leaner" at idle means. Maybe I should go for about 80 to 1, using good fuel and oil as suggested for my special low speed low smoke mix.

Have a look at the redline oil range, top quality oils, the redline I used to run in my 2 stroke rc car smelt awesome

What oil are you using? Maybe try switching to XD50 it's more expensive but supposed to smoke less. Penrite also make a full synthetic 2 stroke oil which is supposed to be low smoke.

that has had the oil injection removed at 50:1.it smokes a bit on start up and if you are at low reves for any length of time

but otherwise it is good.i just use what ever oil is the cheapest at the time.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I agree

with Dtrain. Use the XD50 as this will maintain good lubrication while reducing smoke. Go 60:1 as this will be fine with most 2strokes.
