2 Unusual catches
Headed down to the Dawesville Cut today coz I've found that this wild weather seems to turn on the tailor, skippy and salmon trout under the bridge but didnt manage any today, so my brother and I headed down to the estuary end of the groin in the break in the weather.
My brother noticed something unusual sitting at the bottom of the channel just a couple meters out so out went the halco twisty and he managed to jag it and pull it up. Can anyone identify what fish it was and where they are usually caught? Never seen one in the cut and looks like more an offshore species so figured it mightve gotten thrown overboard by a passing boat. It looked to be a pretty solid fish, the head and frame alone was about 3kgs.
He also managed to catch a whiting on the twisty aswell, also something i have never seen done before, and as you could see he was pretty proud of it hehe.
The last picture was a photo taken at the ocean end of the cut.

Mate thats a crackin catch on the twisty.
But its gotta be said, if you're not sure what fish you've caught, take a photo and let it swim another day!

Not sure if my ID is correct
Not sure if my ID is correct (a little diffucult with only the frame) but estuary cod distribution is from shark bay northwards.... so a little far south for this guy. Maybe someone kept some frames from up north and used it for crab bait.

good point Jay and my guess
good point Jay and my guess would be estuary cod, who knows with this current it may well be one but the idea of crab pot bait is more plausible IMO

would say it was a gold spot
would say it was a gold spot sweet lip, usually a northern waters fish but with the warm water we having and all the weird and wonderful species caught down here this year it dosnt surprise me.

I caught one of these
about 20 miles out from Pt Peron a couple of months ago. Didn't have the camera ready, so didn't get a pic before I let it go - I thought it looked like a small coral cod but wasn't sure. The one I caught was only about 30cm.
Save the Whales! May as well - they won't fit in my catch bag!!!

dunno if it's a sweetlip.
dunno if it's a sweetlip. bottom jaw's protruding more like some sort of cod
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Looks like a Honeycomb cod
Looks like a Honeycomb cod that I used to fillet sometimes when working at Action 5 or 6 years ago. I have no idea idea about why it is down here though, as it's a Northern fish. Maybe someone was using it as crab bait?

i would say if it was crab
i would say if it was crab bait it would mean it was in the water for a while and i think being in the estuary the blowies would of stripped it in no time

Yeah no idea Skrewloose, was just a thought... I can't see it being there for any other reason. A very odd catch.

I would say Wirrah
I would say Wirrah considering the location but it sure does look like an Estuary Cod, maybe one that was bought, filleted and brought down to be used as crab/cray bait.
