20/09/2012 REPORT and FISH ID

Hi Guys,

The weather was looking promising yesterday so I told work I had uni assignments to do and instead took off for a fish.

Got to the Point Peron ramp at about 5 and got to our spot at 7. The swell was shit as it was close together and chopped up. it was pretty hard to make good progress. Doing about 10kn all the way to our spot roughly 50ks out. It probably doesnt help being in a 5.5m bowrider!

Got to the spot which was firing all day. No Dhuies though which was a pity!

Took home an 80cm Queenie (First one ever too!) a 70, 60 and 62cm pinky and 2 Nannas. Caught a heap more pinkies, small nannas and a 50 cm queenie - all released as we wanted the bigger fish. Hopefully they are making babies now!

Just got a few questions:

Foxfish - are they good eating and do they count to the baglimit?

Is the baglimit 8 demersal per boat or 2 per person? e.g we had 3 ppl on board - could we take home 6 or 8 fish?

Are queenies demersal?

I also need a fish ID. my mate caught the most retarded looking fish. It is the second image down...

Overall it was a good day. Got back to the ramo in an hour.

Cheers for reading!

Chinaman Leatherjacket

The second photo is a Chinaman Leatherjacket Nelusetta ayraudi.  Quite a distinctive fish, and good eating.  They reach 70-odd centimetres.

its 2 fish per license, so 3 LICENSED fishers = 6 category 1 demersal fish. you were spot on with your limit.

foxfish are good eating, and are a cat. 1 demersal, so yes, it counts towards your bag limit.

Nice catch

Yep its 2 "high risk" demersals per person with fishing from a boat licenses.

Foxfish unfortunately do count as "high risk" demersals, as do other weird ones like parrot fish and pigfish believe it or not.

Go to the fisheries website and download a copy of the regs print it out and either keep a copy in your tackle box, camera bag or on the boat somewhere permanently so you are never without it. Nothing worse than thowing a good fish back when it might have been in a different category and therefore legal. Maybe the only thing worse would be keeping something that wasn't legal. If in doubt chuck it back.

I keep my copy of te regs in my camera bag, as that's the least likely to get wet and its generally the first thing on the boat whenever I go fishing.

Got to say , I can't see the point in keeping foxfish.   They are pretty small and slow growing.

Better to return it and keep fishing for something more worthwhile.

Nice bag btw.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

foxfish

foxfish are remarkably slow growing. A 30cm Foxfish is around 50-60 years of age. They are good eating, but the slow growth rate puts doubt into deciding whether to keep them or not. Great Day out by the looks, persisting through the rough conditions definitely paid off, well done!! We have been hounded by the chinaman Leathery's down here, and they either bite through 6/0 hooks, or make light work of any pound leader.
