Long weekend weather

What are the collective thoughts about this weekend? I went to Rotto last Saturday to see my daughter complete her first Rotto swim and the forecast got it massivelt wrong and we got spanked! All the forecasts had the wind dropping to below 10 knots in the middle of the day and it just didn't drop all day so I'm a bit scepticle. Almsot the whole week has been windier than forecast.

Sunday morning definitely a goer, my only problem is beach launch with the swell being up. Anything over 1.5 becomes or can become problematic.

We had been thinking of GI mate but are planning Rotto if tomorrow is okay. Sunday looks like a cracker and Monday is okay too if the forecast is right.

Rotto should be OK for an early run. you'd want to be there at 10 ish. Southerly should be gusting to 20's in Thompsons by 11 and will be potentially into the 30's at west end by evening.

 We got out Saturday morning

Mon, 2025-03-03 19:05

We got out Saturday morning and trolled behind Bretton reef for a few km, spotted a bust up and got as close as we could. A big oily burley trail and floated mulies to absolutely nothing sadly.

Heading into the Whiting patches and filled up on 40 big fat Sandy's and a few wrasse etc as by catch. The Wrasse and smaller Whiting going into vac sealed bags for northern bait at the end of April. BRING IT ON!

Water Temp

Tue, 2025-03-04 08:05

What was the water temp up that way?

Fished out behind the three mile at Mindarie, was only 22.5 degrees. Pushed out to the recfishwest fads off Mindarie, only 23 degrees.

Warm water must be eddying in south of Rottnest.

Tue, 2025-03-04 16:36

It was a smick over 23  by my sounder BJ was hoping for more. I read a Lancelin report and they've been getting Macks up there but I think out near the FAD that's out that way.

Was worth a shot at glory but not to be. Focussing on heading north now, maybe one last crack early April but want to get the boat ship shape.

 Probably should have stayed

Tue, 2025-03-04 14:59

Probably should have stayed home as I ran into problems halfway to Rottnest. Cruising along nicely then suddenly revs shot up and the boat slows down with something clearly wrong. Limped into Longreach and initially diagnosed it as a spun prop hub, only to find out Mercruiser Bravo 3 legs don't have hubs as such. Possibly much worse outcome is a buggered coupler. Not an expensive part but it requires lifting the boat and then lifting the engine out to get to it! $$$ There are a couple of possibilities that are not as bad but I have a feeling this is what we're stuck with. Bloody boats!

Thanks fellas. I made the decision to push on and at least enjoy the weekend, which we did. Had the forecast for yesterday been average I would have turned around and limped home then. Thankfully yesterday was a great day to cruide home at 9/10 knots with a light westerley at my back.

Thanks Andy but it seems unlikley given the options. At least I have a mechanic I trust 100% to do the right thing in terms of a diagnosis and repair costs.

Yeah you're right mate. I was very pleased to get home without a tow. It was a good day for a slow cruise home. Just spewing that I didn't have an outfit to troll with on the way! There were definitely fish around but whiting rods were not going to cut it!

A good start to the week.

Mon, 2025-03-10 11:44

A good start to the week. Mechanic rang to say it was just a shift cable adjustment that was needed! Best possible outcome of all the things it could have been. I defaulted to the worst case scenario so this is just brilliant news. My guy had another mechanic (my old mechanic) install a bellows and shift cable in November when he was flat out and it just wasn't done right.

Yep great news thanks fellas. I try not to be pessimistic but it's often the safe way to be with boats! Of the various possibilities I certainly didn't expect the quickest and cheapest. It might cost me an hours labour Gordon given my old mechanic installed it but I'm happy to pay for his time. He has done me some big favours before so it's all good.

Absolutely! I also value that I can contact my mechanic over the weekend as I did when I had this issue. I wanted to get his opinion on whether it was going to do more damage limping home or should I get a tow. To be fair he also said it could be something pretty simple at the time but my experience with boats is that it usually isn't simple!

Just as an update, I took the boat to Rotto on the weekend and it didn't skip a beat. To give you an idea of the good bloke my mechanic is, he called me on Saturday afternoon while I was having lunch at Pinky's to check how it went. That's service for you!
