2012 Yamaha 150HP

When I flush the outboard, I'm getting no water out of the telltale when I put the muffs on it. Is that because it takes a few minutes to warm up before water comes out of the tell tale or do I need to flush in a bin? Water comes out of tell tale in the ocean but never remembered to check how long it takes to start coming out when I stick it in the ocean.

All ideas/help appreciated. Thank you

Are your muffs the double

Mon, 2016-03-07 11:24

Are your muffs the double ones? make sure your tap is turned on full and even squeeze them on the motor for a minute and see if it comes out. I had the same problem and changed to the double muff and works fine now with the tap up full. When down at the boat ramp the wash down station pressure is shit and i have to squeeze them on for a minute before it starts flowing.

 Yamahas don't seem to like

Yamahas don't seem to like muffs much. You need a really good seal for them to work.

 If youve got  the flushing

Mon, 2016-03-07 14:08

If youve got  the flushing  attachment(the one that you  use with out running engine) then you can prime engine using that for a few minutes then put muffs on and start engine.

The bigger engines (mostly the 6 cylinder )  need  alot of water  so having  all the water jacket full of water to start with   helps.

Also as stated above the  dual  inlet muffs work  best.

Yea my yamaha 115 is the same.

I need to have the tap full on and give the muffs a squeeze to get the water flowing....Once it starts flowing it's normally fine.

Once the "Overheat" alarm went off even though the tell tale was flowing well, so adjusted the muffs and squeezed them again and in no time it was running cool again.

The double flow muffs sound like the go though !!

Running boat 2-3x per week

Mon, 2016-03-07 14:48

 Thanks guys for suggestions.

I think I read on here that flushing is not as important if engine gets used very regularly, such as the 2-3x per week that I'm using it. Is this true?

 Probably not however I would

Probably not however I would still flush it each time to keep the waterways clear of salt when they dry out whilst not being used.

Especially with the thermostat which could stick if salt is allowed to build up and dry in there.

I could be wrong but that's my thoughts.

water

My understanding is with just muffs on shouldn't rev as stuffs the impeller , either the heat makes it brittle or being rubber can get tacky and stick

I would recommend flushing I never worried too much with my 75 but only a few months ago taddle tale stopped working pulled the water jacket off and was a clump of dried salt/ corrosion ? Just a white clump blocking the outlet , cleaned up the rest of the jacket as  had lumps of corrosion ect almost growing on the inside

A bit of fresh water cheaper and easier than gaskets and parts which I found to be bloody expensive

Mind you is getting on towards 15 year old donk so won't happen overnight but next donk will be flushing religiously

I have an F115

Using an ancient set of muffs, the good old strong type with a good seal, usually takes 10 secs at idle to push out of the telltale . Regular flushing is always a good idea--some people go verboard with it, frwak out if they can't flush every time--if you are camped remote you may have to go a month without flushing, but she is running every day, staying wet. I may flush mine with Saltaway this year after returning from the annual trip, see what the flushed water looks like.
