2016/17 Western Warriors
Surely this HAS to be our year in the Shield?
JL two seasons ago on the eve of our last final appearance in 2015 after also making it the previous year said that he was less interested in winning that final than he was in building a dynasty and I reckon now is the time to start cashing on what has been a brilliant program of developing a youthful side with a mix of experience and full of WA talent rather than repeat the mistakes for the previous 20 years.
NCN is ruled out for at least the first half of the season and you’d think he’d struggle to come back from lumbar stress fractures (which hurts us with the ball, in hte field and with the bat) but that still leaves us Dorf, Paris, Turner, Moody, Agar, Mackin, Rimington and AJ Tye (who I am not convinced is a 4 day bowler). You can also throw Cartwright and Bosisto into that mix as guys that can take wickets. The key will be to keep the big Dorf injury free which provides a very good framework for an attack that will regularly take 20 wickets. Can JL convince Mitch Johnson to play Shield cricket after the BBL… yes please JL.
Our batting is where we’ll need to pick up this year and we are at the mercy of the Australian selectors with SMarsh (just broke his finger and probably get dropped after dominating as usual), Voges (who I think they will transition out of the side soonish) and Bancroft who is likely to replace Burns if he fails to make runs and soon. You can all but book MMarsh in for a full summer for Australia. I’d love to see Bosisto keep grinding out the runs but in doing so not giving his wicket away and see Cartwright build on his form last year and his recent handy batting in the recent NPS. Agar is fast becoming a batting all-rounder and Turner is no mug and Klinger and Whiteman making big runs in the middle order may well hold the key to allowing guys like Agar and Turner to play their natural game and score quick runs and get those bonus points which is so important in the 4 day format.
Bring the Shield back where it belongs lads.

You do realise that 40.2 (his FC avg) is more than 40 right? Averaged 57 in the 14/15 Shield but can't find his 15/16. Add to that he is averaging 47.1 in the Baggy Green since Sep 2014.
Don't get me wrong you won't find a bigger Smarsh critic than me after he wasted his talent early on but how do you expect a guy to make consistant runs when he consistantly gets dropped after making a ton?
Either way I'll be happy to have him with a black cap on and come and and plays his part when he gets a call up due to injury.

Averaging 47 in Tests in the previous 2 years. Averaged 48.3 in the 2015/16 Shefield Shield and averaged 57 in the 2014/15 Shield season. I look at recent form over a decent period of time than career form.
He has been his own worst enemy in years gone by throwing away his wicket like it was a broken thong but you cannot deny he is in good touch and has been for 2-3 years now. He failed to cement a spot when it was up for grabs but he'll come in and make some runs whenever required.
Good for WA and good for Australia.

NCN out for the whole summer
NCN out for the whole summer which is going to hurt us but you'd think if fit he'd have featured pretty heavily in the ODI side in any case.
At the Warrior's launch JL was saying that the focus this year will be on mental toughness on and off the field. He's developed this young talented side and the timing is now perfect to start turning them into a mature side that really takes it up to the opposition physically and mentally. I have a good feeling about this season after almost 2 decades of misery.
On the shorter side it looks like Cartwright is going to be opening for WA in the BBQ Cup as he has an uncanny knack to find gaps so here's hoping he can get us off to a good start. The lads have a practive match on the weekend and the big Dorf played his first match since Jan and bowled figures of 3-10 of 8 against a Premiers XI. Turner smashed 49 from 27.

I believe there were issues post the ball hitting Hughes that were botched and if those processes can be improved regardless of whether he was already fatally injured all good and well.
Anything that happened prior to that is just a tragic event.

Kinda hard one. Smarsh deserves a spot based on current form but if Ashes are the end goal I'd be giving Head or Doolan a crack in the middle order if a spot comes up. Smarsh should be 2nd picked in the sub continent going forward however.

Solid but slow start from the lads with Klinger making quick runs and Smarsh making a solid 73 before a ripper c&b from Head. His stroke play is up there with the best handful of batsmen in the world and it's his mental game and fitness that holds him back.
You'd have to think that Mmarsh is getting close to being on borrowed time as all rounders actually need to make runs.

It's a mystery for sure, I think they have a general policy of picking an all rounder that can bowl in the corridor consistantly i.e. one that can keep things tight and not necessarily take wickets to give the bowlers a rest and Jimmy may be a victim of his success in ODIs?
My preference is to just pick the 6th best batman and forget about the all rounder until someone is genuinley better than average at both as an absolute minimum with the exception of Symonds who's fielding was worth at least a wicket and 20 runs.

To win the tests we need to take 20 wickets, I'm not convinced that Starc, Hazelwood, Lyon and mennie can do that. Hazelwood has been disappointing against good opposition, would prefer Siddle or Coulter-Nile if fit. Speaking of fit we need Pattinson and Cummins to get fit too. Those two and Starc would allow the 6th batsman.

Hazelwood would do well to do some work with McGrath and work on his seam position to get them to nip in or out more. I dream of the day we have a fit Pattinson and Cummins in the same side although I think a fit Dorf when fit (who isn't ffs) is a better option than Starc with Starc being used as a 4th quick when required then again I am WA biased. NCN is out for the season.

Starc slides too many balls
Starc slides too many balls down the on side in the red ball game for my liking releasing pressure on the batman and relies on other bowlers building pressure to get his wickets. If he can bowl a better corridor then he will be deadly in tests. Yeah NSW= Baggy Green haha

What are your thoughts on Sam Whiteman Mr Frost? He looked like a certainty to play at the next leveal two years ago and now he is batting behind Agar at shield level. Is he over-rated, correctly rated or out of form?

Two seasons ago I also thought he half a chance to take over from Hadden with Wade being a sub standard gloveman. I think he's a good (young) player that had a standout season and appears to have rested on his laurels and gone backwards as a result.
Bosisto should NOT being playing in the middle order.
I do like the look of Cartwright this season after his strong finish to last years Shield season. Has the tools to be a genuine all rounder.
What would a shield campaign be without the Warriors capitulating in the first two rounds.

Big wraps on the young fella and I didn't think he'd play but he's just come out and bowled 2/11 from 5 overs in the first session in Hobart with Tas 5/90. Let's hope he doesn't go down the injury path of so many before him.

Dorf on return got figures of 9/37 in the 1st innings to tear through the experienced Vic. We are a real chance with him fit and Paris still a possibility.

Great 2nd half of the season
Great 2nd half of the season for the boys but if you're expecting other teams to lose to make the final you clearly haven't done enough.
The positives are that Cartwright and Turner have emerged as world class players and we unearthed a brilliant 17y old in Cam Green and have Paris and NCN to come back and most of our lads are still only early 20s and are only now becoming battle hardenedp

I think some will look for more opportunities to press claims for a baggy green.

If JL's plans are to develop a winning team that has its number one priority as supplying players for the Aussie team...
1.Agar needs to play as a bowler
2. Send M Marsh to Tasmania for regular games and develop Turner/Cartwright as the all-rounder
3. Who will supply the into-the-wind bowling? WA has supplied fantastic bowlers that can exploit swing/seam(Massie, Alderman)
4. Is Whiteman in the Aussie team thinking? Victoria, Queensland will be looking for keepers. Wade is doing enough to hold his place and both Neville and Paine are coming fast after him. Wade is moving to Tasmania next season so that will throw a spanner in the works overall.
5. AJ Tye?
6. Moody has had an excellent season. How do you fit him in?
7. All good problems to have and good for WA and Australian cricket.
