craypot suggestions

 Hey guys,

getting back into craypots after many years out and just wondering best recommendations for type of pot.

Im using a 5.6 mtr hydrofield so fair bit of space but no tipper or winch at this stage.

should i buy new or just hang out for 2nd hand and should i go fullsize or will 3/4 do the job?

Also any improvements of the plastic pot in recent years or are they still inferior catchers??

would appreciate all experience and opinions.

cheers

Rob

cheers piggy ,thanks for the comments mate and yes i do still make them ..

with the native timber logging ban having come into place getting reliable jarrah from a mill wasa big issue for awhile ,, so i do it part time now as well as other work

however, steel base or timber base both catch well , if you buy timber base make sure the actual base frame is bolted to the side frames ,, dont buy a timber pot that has just nailed , screwed or stapled battens on the bottom alone ,, as sure as hell once it gets abit of swell or rough weather it will start to work loose and in short time break apart as there is nothing holding it together

cheers hezzy

since mclown introduces the native timber logging ban , jarrah has been hard to get as down south here at least a dozen mills have closed ,, which means not only jarrah , but pine as well as some did small amounts of pine ,, trying to buy pine from westpine at dardanup is near impossible for small users

now i only know of 4 mills left south of bunbury doing small amounts of logs from mine site clearing , there are a few small spot mill operators that cut logs of prvate property or mill blue gum marri , sydney sugar gum etc ,,,

price for jarrah has gone up 250 % in last 3 years ...so its an exxy cray pot to have in all jarrah nowdays ,, i just bought a heap of 50 x25 mill jarrah for pot frames ,, and 250 mm x 20 mm for battens ,, got to grab it while you can .. im about to make up 2 pro pots for myself to use with sydney sugar gum ,, from a small private lewi saw mill supplied by alocal farmer,, see hoe it goes in ocan and catches over summer as in time we will have to use alternatives to jarrah

you will find scrap yards etc want high prices for old dry jarrah ..

 Hey mate.

2nd hand 3/4 pots will catch, pulling by hand is tough but doable. Steel bottoms are very scratchy on the gear without a tipper. Jarrah bottoms catch just as good if not better than steel bottoms in my opinion. Jarrah bottoms need two weights though. If your Northside check out Dags Craypots Wangara he has everything you could possibly need.
