$25 million boat harbour for Augusta

$25million boat harbour to be built in Augusta

The State Government has unveiled plans for a new $25million boat harbour at Augusta, with construction due to start later this year.

Premier Colin Barnett said the harbour, to be built at Flat Rock in Flinders Bay, would provide much-needed, safe direct ocean access for recreational and commercial craft between Busselton and Albany.

“The harbour will service the region's commercial and tourism fleets while providing a regional and State destination point for the ever increasing recreational boating sector,” Mr Barnett said.

"There is an urgent need for a sheltered harbour at Augusta as navigation of the shallow ocean entrance to the commercial boating facility in the Blackwood River is increasingly difficult and prevailing winds and strong ocean currents make launching from the coast unsafe.”

The project, funded through the Royalties for Regions program, includes the construction of two breakwaters to create a protected harbour basin featuring four boat launching ramps, boat holding jetties, a fixed 40-metre service jetty and associated facilities including at least 160  car/trailer parking bays and 90 car-only parking bays.

Further stages of development may include the provision of up to 50 boat pens and commercial development opportunities.

The Premier said the project would provide flow-on benefits to local community.

“This is great news for local business operators and the general Augusta community, Mr Barnett said.

“The new harbour is of particular importance to the existing whale watching and fishing industries, which are currently limited by lack of access to safe landing jetties.

"The project delivers on the State Government's commitment to provide improved boating infrastructure throughout Western Australia.”

In the 2011-12 State Budget, $68million was allocated to enhance recreational boating facilities across regional WA.

“I’d also like to commend the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River for its work in ensuring the success of this project,” the Premier said.

NICE :-)  Would love to see some drawings for it. Gunna be better than what we getting here. Not that we ever had any dramas with Flinders ramp. That was part of going down there, an adventure.

Better

Will be a huge boost to both the recreational and professional fishermen down there. The ramp at Flinders leaves a lot to be desired with any sort of swell or easterly winds stuffing it up and Dead Finish  is only a very last resort in my book after being swamped and bogged there, both at the same time.

Demand assessment for boat pens at Augusta Boat Harbour

The Department of Transport (DoT) is assessing demand for boat pens planned for future stages of the $25 million Augusta Boat Harbour.

DoT General Manager of Coastal Infrastructure Steve Jenkins said to assist with future stages of development at the harbour which may include the provision of up to 50 boat pens and commercial development opportunities, DoT is seeking information from the boating community about the number and size of pens they would need at the new facility.

The current harbour works, funded by Royalties for Regions, includes the construction of two breakwaters to create a protected harbour basin featuring a four lane boat launching ramp, two boat holding jetties, a 40 metre service jetty and associated facilities and parking for at least 160 vehicles with trailers.

"The information provided by current boat owners and those planning to purchase a vessel requiring a pen will assist in determining the number of pens needed, pen layout and funding levels for future stages," Mr Jenkins said.

The harbour, at Flat Rock in Flinders Bay, will provide a much needed safe haven for recreational and commercial craft between Busselton and Albany.

Mr Jenkins said following the commencement of work on site in October there had been steady progress in relation to the project.

"The completion of the access road will now allow commencement of the preliminary earthworks over the quarry site and construction of the temporary laydown areas in February, after the Christmas holiday period has finished. These works are required in readiness for the quarrying of rock for the large breakwaters and bulk earthworks contract ," Mr Jenkins said.

“The road, undertaken by the Shire utilising local contractors and suppliers, has been initially constructed to a temporary limestone surface and will be sealed during the final stage of the overall project."
