585 fade out

Guys just wondering at what speed does the picture on your Furuno 585 fade out. I'm getting up to about 10-15 knts and then it's pretty much un-readable. Does this mean I need to adjust the tranny? Or something else I can adjust on the unit itself? Cheers Andy

By fade out I assume you mean no bottom reading is coming back over 10knots? I assume you have upped the gain but even then that's not good, deffo have to adjust / reposition

Yeah Lamby. No Bottom readout

Yeah Lamby. No Bottom readout and the pic goes fuzzy. So drop the tranny slightly? I got it positioned pretty good as per instructions 3mm below the hull.

Had a hell of a time with the old tranny trying to position it so I feel the pain, took a long time to sort out due to the amount of turbulent water around the stern with trim tabs etc.

Before I went with the thru hull I hung over the transom going 25knots to pick the most clear water and marked it, then it was a case of gradually dropping it down until it was right... did take a few go's & had it a bit lower than what I would of picked

Good heads up Lamby, cheers for that. Sounds like a bit of tranny adjustment then.

You mean gain adjustment Patto? If so will try that as I had it in cruising mode.

Ah if you had it in cruising mode it should read good at that speed so id be going with tranny placement..im running mine in manual at the moment using settings a fellow fishwrecked member gave me and its reading awsome in the 50s havent tried deeper yet,but when i was in shallower water was getting a solid bottom reading but with the odd gap appearing so something i gota figure out

Not bragging but good to 38 knots

Professionally installed by Chivers Marine - in all honesty I caanot believe how good a picture I get even at high speed - virtually no discernable difference either on manual or auto and we generally run minimum gain.  And the speed came from the GPS

Our only problem is that the transducer kicks up at high speed (standard plastic transom mount) so it does sit low in the water in clear flow

Actually that's the type of info I'm after Sunshine. At least now I know what type of readout I'm looking for.

You must angle the tranny

You must angle the tranny slightly down at the rear, not parralel to the hull bottom, to stop turbulence over the surface of the tranny. This is critical to high speed readings.

certianly not! must be a lowrance in disguise

I installed my 585 with Airmar 258 1kw transducer and i can still see the bottom at 35knots, starts to go away a bit after that, just follows the install guide and it's working fine i like the auto idea to see if it makes it better and see how far below the hull the tranny sits and if it's pointed down a little.
