60lbs of mulloway magic
Submitted by young_yakker on Sat, 2011-03-26 15:59
went down to a local beach to try for one of these mulloway that have been getting caught lately and at 7:10 the dream came true.
After we had arrived and set the first set of baits i decided to go have a chat to a couple of blokes next to us to see what had been happening recently and to see if they had got one of theese elusive creatures but they hadnt got anything so we started talking about how crap up north has been and how the water is so hot.
About 45 minutes after sunset i hear my mate screaming BRAD BRAD BRAD so i do the 50 sprint to my rod as i get to my rod nothings happening so i tighten the drag and start winding fast then i come up real solid with huge head shakes and screaming runs. In one of the runs it took over a hundred meters. As im fighting the fish my mates line gets tangled with mine and i thought disaster, but with him walking with me it was fine.
But then there was another bloke fishing just next to us, i yelled can ya bring in ya line but he didnt and i ended up with two lines tangled around mine but this wasnt going to stop me. Eventually i had one massive knot in the two lines so i couldnt even wind so when the fish would run i would run into the water and when it stopped running i would run up the beach.
After about 15 minutes the fish was starting to tire , and becoming easier to bring in. as the fish was in about a foot of water the people helping me land the fish were saying its a shark its a shark, and i thought it could be the way it fought as it went harder than all my other fish including my sharks. but after a gaff cleanly got it and my mate grabbing its tail it was finally landed and safely on the beach.
I let out a few huge screams of joy and went and thanked everybody who helped me land it. the fish was caught on my new setup i got for spinning for macs and was the first fish caught on it.
It weighed in at 27kg/60lb.what a great fish and experience as well as having so many people willing to help me land a fish of a lifetime.
im so STOKED CANT BELIEIVE IT. it also took twenty minutes to land

Awesome fish mate!!!!
Good story too. I can just imagine how frustrating it would be if everything didn't go so well but it sounds like a combination of skill and luck helped you land the beast!

Cracking mulla mate - well
Cracking mulla mate - well done.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
