7mm Anchor Chain
Submitted by snuffs on Tue, 2013-04-02 09:37
All,
I have a windlass anchor winch from the US (US boat). It takes 7mm chain. I'm looking to replace the current chain with a longer length. I have been to a few specialist boating stores around Perth and had two mixed responses. Response (a) you can use 6mm chain, it is the closest fit and will work proprly on 7mm US anchor windlass systems. Response (b) 6mm will slip if you try to use it. You need a new windlass or replace the teeth to a smaller version.
Does anyone know the real answer, or specifically has experience with this themselves. Can I buy 7mm chain in Perth?
Cheers

Gypsy
You will need to get a 6mm gypsy, as i ordered one from the states and had to get one also.
Give Chivers Marine a call in perth he'll be able to help you out.
Or you can get chain of a block and tackle i have heard

Why change
Why change down from 7mm to 6mm chain?
The heavier the chain the better it is for your anchoring and it helps steady the boat more than smaller/ lighter weight chain.
