Advice please
I would appreciate some advice from the mechanically minded amongst you. Like a lot of other people we are doing it a little tough at the moment so the wife's Santa Fe AWD had it's 200,000 k service today rather than buying her a new Landcruiser - ha! The manager at the service centre has told her that the fact i had 225 -70-R16 tyres fitted to the front last week instead of 235 - 70 -R16's as are fitted to the rear will cause imminent catastrophic failure of the centre diff. The back tyres are apparently scalloped from worn shocks - not visible but there is a bit of road rumble. Is he pulling my choke or is this possible? We seriously can't afford to fit another $400 worth of tyres and $ 400 of shocks just now. I am not sure if he is having a lend but spark plugs at 430 each and the power steering not flushed unless we ante another $88 seems a bit strange on $1300 plus gst service.

I am no mechanic - but it sounds like you are getting ripped...
You should go back to the tyre place to get the tyres replaced because it was their stuff-up. They should know what should be going onto your car. You could even hit them up for costs to repair any issues which may have resulted from it. If you dont have any luck just go to Consumer Protection.
I think your typo for the spark plug price was more like it - $4.30 would be more like it (or $5...)

Spark plugs $30 each, mine
Spark plugs $30 each, mine cost around $140ish for all 6 in my Outback (iridium), luckily only get changed every 100k. And yes, having different size tyres on front and back on a AWD will lead to some major problems with the back wheels turning a tad slower or faster than the front ones.

you certainly sound like your getting ripped
as for the tyres as long as the size and height are the same which they are a little extra width on the rear wont harm the diff! 1300 for a service what the bloody hell did they do to it??? i would suggest finding a decent mechanic!

7739ian the 2 types of tyres
7739ian the 2 types of tyres you have are most certainly different sizes. One size will travel further than the others.
Not much but are different and will eventually do harm to a awd Vehicle

The 70 on the size represent
The 70 on the size represent the Aspect Ratio of the tyre.
Meaning that 70% of the width of the tread is the height of the Side Wall.
and obviously 70% of a 225 is not the same as a 235

Hopefully that link worked.
Its the rolling radius you look for when comparing 2 tyres and in this case its 7mm.

ABS Too
Yes the tyres could be a problem for a number of systems, with rough calculations, there is about 2.2cm difference in circumference.
This is a problem for the ABS as it thinks the front and back are going at different speeds, and starts messing with the computations, I did have a friend who had a problem on a BMW who had to replace his ABS computer for using different size tyres.
As for the diff, it usually only becomes a problem if you have a diff lock or limited slip diff, I'm not too sure what your car has.
The issue with the shocks can actually be felt rather than having a look, just run a flat hand across the tread of the tyre from front to back, not side to side, and you can usually feel little bumps.
If your shocks are gone, this can be a big issue for handling and braking, if you value your safety, best to get them replaced, sorry for the bad news

I had a different size on my Subaru when I chucked on the spare once and my ABS and VDC light immediately came on, wouldn't go off until I put the original wheel back on.

Dropped my Outback off at my mobile mechanics home tonight for a CV boot change out, passenger side rocker cover gasket changed out and a 190k service with all the fruit and that will only come in around $500ish, my mechanic is probably the best Subaru mechanic in WA, what he does'nt know is not worth knowing anyway. Used to be a head mechanic for the World Subaru Rally Team assigned to Peter Solberg.

Thanks everyone
Great help as usual, i really appreciate it- other than the fact i will have to spend another $800 on shocks and another 2 tyres! Still, cheaper than a new diff.

Ian if you near town, go to Soctty at Kingspark auto & electrical, he is just off the Freeway near the Federal police offices in West Perth.
Scotty is very well priced and does all my services on my cars over the years. AND I have a Jeep as well, so I know all about expensive parts...lol
yes you being ripped for the service and plugs etc, I paid $600 for a major service on a V8 petrol Jeep.!!!
the tyres will only make a huge difference if you have locking central diff or limited slip diff. It's not good practice to have different sized fornt and rear wheels on a WAD, and could lead to extra wear on the central diff trnasfer box. Most All Wheel Drives are not true four wheel drives, as they don't lock up the central diff, they use a torque splitter to ensure a bias of power / drive either goes to the front or back wheels. I'd check the type of central diff and torque splitter you have before rushing out ans spending 800 on new tyres. Make a few calls first.
