AM Radio Interference
Submitted by Seaquest on Sun, 2016-04-03 09:34
Hi all, I've just replaced an old stereo with a Fusion stereo and are having trouble with the AM radio. The AM radio works fine untill I turn something on like the GPS, lights etc then I get really bad interference. I have used all the old wiring and aerial from the old stereo and never had a problem with that. The FM works fine all the time so I'm not sure what I should do. I like the AM to listen to the footy when out fishing. Anyone had a similar issue or can suggest a way to fix it.
Cheers

Try moving the stereo aerial
Try moving the stereo aerial wiring away from all the other wiring in the boat. Usually interference is caused by electrical currents running too close to the wiring for the device that is having the problem. I know you say it was fine with your old head unit but this head unit is likely more sensitive to the electrical currents from your other devices.

can get it along way out
can get it along way out depending on your aerial, but we easily pick up 720 at the Abrolhos with a 12" whip aerial.
Those splitters that connect your stereo to the VHF aerial are useless though.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

I know you used to be able
I know you used to be able get inline suppressors, used them on my ol XT Falcon to stop static coming through my radio.

Does the antenna lead have a
Does the antenna lead have a shield that is earthed?
You could just try wrapping the antenna lead, but not the antenna, in aluminium foil and earth that as this will leak any RF noise to earth from other devices.

It's a standard GME AM/FM
It's a standard GME AM/FM marine antenna. Not sure if it's earthed or not.

Just get a Couple of
Just get a couple of Ferrite Clamps from Jaycar or any decent electronics shop, and put them on as close to the radio as Possible on power and antenna cable
Wrap the cables around the clamps as many times as you can so its a tight fit, problem solved
