amps and watt-nots
Heres a question for the 12 & 24 volt techies.
I'm just gettin things sorted for an upcoming camping trip, and trying to minimise weight and excessive gear, ive realised my 2.5kva generator is overkill for what i need.
I have a 60 litre engel, that the website reckons will draw 0.5 - 4.2 amps max. It will be run off an arkpak battery box, and its charger draws 24v-5amps. Can someone tell me how many watts they both convert to? It will be run off the arkpak/deep cycle battery and solar panel, but i will need a generator to recharge if i get a few consecutive days of cloudy weather, so the generator will have to power the freezer and charge the battery at the same time.
My 2 options for generators are a 1kva (which is rated to around 800w), or a 1.5kva (rated to 1200 watt). The 1kva genny is a very neat unit, and only weighs 8.5kg, but will it be big enough for what i need it to do??
Comments please.
Scotto.

To get watts you times the
To get watts you times the voltage by the amps.
So 24V x 5amps = 120 Watts. The engel should be 12V x 4.2amps = 50.4 Watts.
The 1kva should be heaps for what your doing.

aaahhh yep, cool
Thanks for that DTrain. I was just doing a bit of googling, and came across a converter table saying something similar, but....
Is it definately 12v x 4.2amps? Could it be 240v 4.2 amps?? As that would put it at over 1000 watts for the engel power, which doesnt sound right, but could be??

I'm pretty sure 4.2amps would be the 12V current draw.

This manual here says it's
This manual here says it's max draw is 4.5 amps at 12V. I'm not sure if thats the model you have, but yours would be close enough.

Hey Scotto,
the 1 kva should be fine. We run an 80l Engel at freeze and another as a fridge up at Ningaloo over X mas using a little Honda. It works a treat. I had to charge the car battery off it once and was told just to run it in normal mode not on Eco mode just when doing the charge up.

Here's a quick one to make sure I get this right. A 240v freezer and the placard says .9amps= 216watts?

scotto..why not ditch the
scotto..why not ditch the solar and just use the genie to give the arkpack a boost every coupla days, since you will have it running the freezer and chewing up juice anyway ?
we were using 2.5 kva Honda
ran 2 big freezers 2 80l engels
shack full of lights and power phones tablets ect ect
and then we used it to charge up the ark pack that was running an engel every other day
so im gussing a 1.5kv 1 freezer and an engel and arkpack wont abuse it to much
unless you need the solar ?

yo gyprock,
Without the solar panel, the 60l engel will only last about 2 days before the battery gets to about 50%, which isnt the best thing for the batterys lifespan and reliability.
I have the solar panels already, and to be honest if i had to choose between the genny or the panel, id choose the panel. I have both anyway, which gives me peice of mind having a few options.

Engel - 4.2A x 12v = 50w
Engel - 4.2A x 12v = 50w MAX
Arkpak - 5A x 24V = 120w Contstant.
So to simply answer your question, go the 1kva! You could run 4 engels and charge 4 arkpaks with no worries!
The most efficiant way to do it is plug your engel and charger into your Genset to charge the battery the quickest without draw.
Just make sure the genset has some kind of surge protection or is rated for your Engel. Yamaha, Engel, Honda are are rated to do this. But if they are not and your compressor dies Engel are pretty cluey and wont fix it under warranty!!
