And now Fisheries can't catch any bull sharks

As was suggested before, why not seek assistance from people who can actually catch fish .......oh no, they don't want anyone else shark fishing as it might put the public at risk

Punch
Punch needs a punch in the head.
Seriously, now we are going to pay for the fisheries to try and catch sharks when there was a FREE resource sitting at his finger tips that the government could have utilised.
They could have had the people that want to catch sharks registered, give them a license to say catch a recommended amount, supply them with set amount of tracking devices, educate them on placing these tracking devices on the animals and send them back. And it's mostly a free service.
As an insensitive they could give the person that caught the shark a right to name it, give him a personal alert we're the shark has been so he can track it for his own curiosity
More sharks get tagged, swimmers get more alerted if there in the area, Shark fishers still get to enjoy hunting them, government gets it done a whole lot quicker and cheaper, its win win. But NO, the government wants to lock it up. I don't understand it.

i suspect it would come down
i suspect it would come down to liability - someone gets bitten tagging a shark and the Govt on the hook (excuse the pun!) as they provided them with the tacking device and intent
I am not saying its right but just speculating on the reasons. Liability insurance has sky rocketed, there are law firms that read through ASX company announcements and forecasts and then 6-12 months later go after the company on the basis that they have not delivered what they said they would - it is cheaper for the company to settle than defend in court - the company settles through their insurance -
If you ever wondered why lawyers were disliked, here's a start....

It was on both 7 and 9 news
And I applaud the detailed comment by Alpha......cracking idea. But as a retired insurance claims manager who handled some of the largest liability claims in this country.....yes the issue of potential liability is problematical BUT a lawyer drafted hold harmless agreement could get around those issues

Have they introduced a shark
Have they introduced a shark tracker in the swan as yet ?
Agree with Alpha, very practical approach which could have set guidelines - no daylight hours, restrictions on burley use and areas of target etc.
Unfortunately practical doesn't get a run in this day and age as we know.

Should be removing a few
Should be removing a few altogether,it's already common knowledge that they will keep frequenting the rivers.
Im sure there are some less fortunate hungry mouths that would be grateful for some seafood this time of year.

Does the public actually want
Does the public actually want to know how often bullsharks frequent popular swimming areas in the river hunting fish etc? With the attack history of the Swan I am much happier with an ignorance is bliss approach unless they are tagging say the 2.5m+ models only.
I can understand tagging Great Whites as they travelling hundreds of kms and it's nice to know when they are close to swimming areas but what if these tagged bullsharks reside in one area of the river and just ping the alerts all day? Going to basically shut down sections of the river due to a very limited history of tragic incidents.

From the limited amount of
From the limited amount of bull shark fishing I done with uwa researchers years back. Involved them laying nets for bull sharks while we line fished for them. There are small buoys up and down the river banks that ping when a tagged bull shark passes. I was lead to believe this was so they could learn more about the habits of the river bulls less so to know where they are

Locals
Have seen a few larger models over the years when transiting along the river between Claremont and Freo. Not common but figure always could be some around. Most recent was a medium sized one last week, maybe 1.5-1.8m length, about 5m off the beach at Chidley Point at first light. Was hunting along the shore with dorsal out.A few dolphins also in the hunt for whatever bait was there. An interesting fact sheet on the NSW bull shark tagging research, which has been going more than a decade, here; https://www.sharksmart.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/1447730/Bull-Shark-fact-sheet.pdf
