Another funky fish

Caught in 65m of water out of Two rocks.

 

Measured between 45-50cm

 

 

Any ideas? The photo doesnt do it justice, the tail half of the fish was bright pruple

I'd say it's the blackspot goatfish (Parupeneus signatus).

Not sure what the sate record is, but that is a big one.

Daniel is spot on.  However, its name is actually Parupeneus spilurus (signatus is an old and incorrect name) - might not be that important to you, but it is to me :-)

 Yep goatfish. Pretty sure it's what the poms call a red mullet and they're supposedly a fine table fish.

them goatfish get very big.. seen one at least a couple of kg caught from coral bay on a sp in 70m

Massive goatfish Bodie!!!!! Apparently 5 star eating...........unfortunately I have found the smaller models to be irresistable to sambos as livies.......nothing else gets a chnace as the sambos just hoover them.
