wopjrb, a few of my customers have seen some but there were no takers. Plenty of small salmon trout around however in Metro and down at the Dawesville cut where Honsu has done well with them & big skippy!
I was told the commercial guy down South (Bunkers Bay) got 7 ton today and spoke to Mike Roenfield also who called me and he said the same so they're coming but sloooowly. Still very early stages for down South and metro would be a late run also.....end of April me thinks!
Only 1 school seen the whole time. None of the locals on the beaches had caught any or seen any caught.
Water temps still warm, up at 22.5 degrees.
There have been murmers that a few years ago the salmon get to albany and stopped due to warm waters, spawned there then swam back..... and that maybe this is happening again. not real sure on this idea.
Heading back to Hamelin bay agin on friday so will have another look see.
I doubt water temp has anything to do with it - used to regularly fish South Tenn beaches near Denmark this time of the year and get both salmon and huge tailor that seem to be there as a result of the current licking around the Cape bringing warmer water south.
I just think the whole season is screwed up as a result of the very late spring we experienced this year and the amazing wet the south coast experienced around harvest time and up until and beyond Christmas. Perhaps all the fresh water pouring in from the rivers down that way have had a greater impact - time will tell !
Just spoke to the Fisheries and the species officer/adviser stated;
"The water temperature has a very significant bearing on the migration of WA salmon. They are a cold water fish and the water temperature ie warmer waters will determine how far they travel up or around the coast and to what depth they migrate in"
around hamelin bay every year there is HUGE skippy plagueing the place, but this year there were none.
Just spoke to my old man who is sitll down at hamelin bay, no Salmon, and also a few people from the caravan park said they usually get big skippy this time of year, and were getting none like us..
Dont know what temps skippy like and dont like. Were a few smaller ones about.
Tomorrow is 1st of April, and there are no salmon at all pretty much along the south west coast, so dont hold your breath on there being a metro run.
