Any reports from Dampier Billfish Shootout.

Anyone able to give a progress report? Looks a bit blowy down that way.

I am glad I am not some of the boys out there. Daisy, Mullows, Skinny, Craig Pearse, Jay B and a few I cant remember certainly would want their acts together out there. Or a few buckets and a shit load of Kwells.

I haven't seen too many

Sun, 2010-06-06 17:27

I haven't seen too many boats up here of late so I don't know how many are in it. Accommodation may have been an issue for people coming up from elsewhere as there has been a movie being made up here (Red Dog) an they have been taking up a lot of the accommodation in the area. The mornings up here haven't been too windy but the arvo's have, pretty stiff easterly blowing here at present.

Cheers
Dale

Saturday was bloody shocking

Sun, 2010-06-06 21:00

Saturday was bloody shocking and today was worse. We had a couple of hookups on Day 1 from unknowns but both spat the hook, didn't look like billies. 50 something bills caught by the fleet on Day 1. Today we had a double hookup early, the second fish spat the hook after about 10 sec, first one stayed connected for a nice sail for Craig. Raised another sail later in the day but wouldn't eat. Max wind gusts out on the water today around 35kt, sustained windspeeds around 28kt.... was pretty hairy. 28 bills caught by the fleet today. Hopefully tomorrow brings fairer weather... I'm off to bed as I'm absolutely stuffed...

Woke up this morning and it

Mon, 2010-06-07 09:39

Woke up this morning and it was already blowing 29-33 knots E at Legendre Island. Decided to hold off and see if the weather eased at all but it's still blowing it's box of as I speak so we'll be giving it a miss on day 3.

Had the same idea as you

Mon, 2010-06-07 11:45

Had the same idea as you Jay.

After yesterdays hiding we decided to give it a miss after looking at the weather this morning. Tagged 2 early saturday, dropped one and then went quiet. Yesterday after scouting around the same spot for a while decided to run with the wind down behind roly rock and decided to come in and got hammered all the way back.

Will enjoy a few beers at the presos tonight though.

Cheers

Shocker

Wed, 2010-06-09 07:51

The forecast didnt look as bad as it ended up being. As far as I know there were only two 6.8mtr Haines' in the comp - one is and Encore and is called 'The Wench' and the second is the Patriot that you must have seen Dale and it was 'Team Richter" and was crewed by the boys from Campbells Tackle (nick Hocking was one of them as well). I think they got a prize for being the first to bail out on Sunday morning (830) and started a fairly steady drop out rate from then!

I had both 'rigger bases strip out of the 8mm tapped holes on my hardtop it was that rough (been in for nearly 2 years) and almost lost me the 'riggers on the first morning. We got a Saily and a Black before midday the first day, but despite best efforts couldnt get any more to stay hooked up.

The winning boat is a 5.5mtr ally centre console called Bush Pig and they finished with 9 sails. Conditions were absolutely shocking - we are lucky that we dont get the swells up here that you guys get down south, or there would have definately been a few more dramas, but that said, I dont think anyone was out there doing the wrong thing.

Brucesta - you missed nothing at all mate, although there isnt a speck of dust anywhere in or out of the boat now!

We spent most of the time to the east/north of the ships - Headed fairly wide on Saturday and worked back in. Actually ended up being fairly comical in the end!

It was the worst weather

Wed, 2010-06-09 11:10

It was the worst weather ever, after that weekend it should be re named to The Deadliest Catch Shootout. Thanks to Jay and Quinnie for being apart of team Bada Bing. Only 1 sail but I had a great weekend. Credit to all the teams that stuck it out and to Bush Pig to fish the worst and last day in a center console( hard core ). Now after that weekend 15-20knts is not that bad after all. High light would watching 1.5m of the bow going under the waves and slowly popping back out, Bloodly scary
