The water temp is WAY to hot for the South West coast. Not expecting anything more than last year. Nothing

Yep
Matts right on the money - gonna have to be a big swing - can't see anything happening for at least the next month in th Sou West apart from the odd resident fish being caught.

Fingers Crossed!
Thanks for the info guys. Yeah was thinking of down Hamelin/Dunsborough way. Oh well, guess it's a little bit too early. Have to keep an eye/ear out...

Well...
if last years anything to go by it's not 'early'. It's just not gonna happen.
My guess would be that the salmon wont even pass Cape Leeuwin let alone head up the west coast this year.
The south coast will be your only hope.

I do agree with the water
I do agree with the water temp issue but another thing I have heard about is that last year there were literally no herring about. This year there are heaps. If the herring are running then maybe the salmon will follow. Only time will tell, but Albany area is already producing pretty good fish. Everyone is on about easter being the time for salmon in the capes area, really I dont think that is true anymore as the last 5 years or so the summer has always run longer or winter started later. Couple of years ago I didnt catch any til June. Give it til May at least before a judgement is made- Mother Nature could just be fu$king with us again.

Yep,
there are not hard and fast rules as to when the run 'starts'.
Up untill 2010 I always caught my first Salmon each year off the capes beaches in late Feb without fail. One year in the first week of Feb.
Last year got the big fat 0.
Everyone has there theories about water temp, food, currents whatever but I think they just do what they do. Just keep your ears open for reports and get out there for a look. Never know where you might find them

Herring / salmon
Don't take much notice of the herring / salmon thing, have seen years where there are heaps and heaps of herring and not a salmon to be seen and other years where there are heaps of herring and mountains of salmon.
Water temperature is what governs them and how far they travel before hitting warm water and spawning then returning back past Esperence. This year looks like being a repeat of last season with bugger all heading up the west coast. Now is usually when they start running at Hamelin IF the water is cold but I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting. Give some of the southern beaches a shot starting from Denmark and working west to Jasper beach, Black point and White point

i was in busselton 2 weeks
i was in busselton 2 weeks ago and caught one about 40 cms near the jetty, i was quite suprised. that was the only one. there was a woman walking along the beach and she said there was a massive school of fish slowley crusing up the beach earlier that morning so im guessing they might of been salmon, but not sure with the water temp at the moment. im moving down to busso next week to live so cant wait to get stuck into some good fishing.
cheers kurt

Salmon trout
At 40cm it would have been a salmon trout from last year or the year befores spawning working their way south. The juveniles usually do the run south around the time the mature fish are doing their up run crossing paths on the way.

There has been one school
There has been one school seen off yallingup I believe. Buzzed past a couple of divers and kept going flat out. But hear odd reports of people hooking salmon. Might be another year for the salmon to be out at the 100 metre mark.

heaps
me and a few mates have been catching them off the beaches around malimup and salmon beach for the last 2 months and have been seeing schools for the last month. the fish have not been really that big with the biggest coming in at around 5kg. not really a bait fan so we have been using halco twisties around 25g, 2000 size reals and 2-4kg rods just for a bit of fun

Reports of a good school at
Reports of a good school at Bunkers a few days ago. Water temps are down from last year in the Bay. Still quite warm but no where close to where it got to last March.

Now we're talking...
Some positive stuff. Very good! Seems like there are some reports of some activity down there...not as bleak as some thought it would be. Might check-em out in a few weeks time.

i saw about 6 this morning,
i saw about 6 this morning, it has spun me out that the resident fish are still hanging around with the metro water temp so warm, unless the water temp only has to do with them breeding...?
